Two paramedics have been assaulted and robbed in Soweto after receiving three bogus emergency calls on Wednesday evening.

Police said the Netcare 911 medics were looking for a patient when a man approached them claiming that he knew where the victim was.

Instead, he directed them to a hostel in Diepkloof where the paramedics were tied up. They were then assaulted and robbed of money, cellphones and their medical kit.

“The suspect drove the ambulance back to Martinus Drive and dropped them there,” said the police's Nomvula Mbense.

“They [the paramedics] went to Diepkloof SAPS to open a case of assault and armed robbery and then the police proceeded to Diepkloof hostel,” she added.

When police arrived at the hostel they found a woman in possession of the medical bag and arrested her. Authorities are now questioning the suspect.

Come on, what is this world coming to. Medics are the people who should always be safe, no matter what the situation is! Typical South Africa, assualt anyone and everyone, regardless! Is it fair to ask, what is this country coming to??

There are a few places in the world where paramedics can only move in under police escort.
I wonder how many extra police we would need for that.

Unfortunately medical and fire personnel are all to often targets.

It got so bad in our township that the ambulance would only collect patients from the charge office closes to the edge of the township.

To enter both fire and medical required police escort.

The community needs to stand up for these emergency personnel and deal with the perpetrators (Not that I condone vigilante behavior)
