Can anyone give advice on products to use for parental control on home PC's? I know of NetNanny and don't mind buying it but not sure if there is an opensource alternate or better option.

Any other advice on the topic also appreciated.

Install a proxy rather. The reasons are as follows:
1. You'll be able to see where people have been surfing
2. You show your kids that you trust them, but will also check up on them.
3. You can revoke access to the net based on what you find in the logs.
4. The kids will learn some responsibility, and cause effect.

pfsense should give pretty much everything you need.

Of course, this might not work if the kids are too young, but will work better with teens.

I prefer to use ActyMac DutyWatch Remote.
Really good program. ActyMac DutyWatch captures all keystrokes, makes periodic screen captures of desktops, logs programs that are opened or closed.
