Is there any standard, or are the sizes as the painter felt fit ?

Was in the cbd earlier, reverse parked. As I got out I glanced to the back of the car - perfect, rear bumper was about 10" short of the rear parking line - "perfection" I thought.
As I walked away from the car I glanced back at it.

Dafuq !!
The front wheels were sitting in the front line of the parking bay - with the rest of the car hanging into the area in front of it !

How is this possible ?

Get a smaller car. It is part of the move in favour of smaller cars. :p

why didn't the driver park the limo? don't you trust him with the limo?

I know that feeling. With time you learn to park closer to the line.
With my car it is always over the "boundaries" of the parking bay. Even when reverse parking by a wall so the boot cannot open without touching the wall.

How to cope with that:
Have faith in your fellow man and their driving abilities. - Trust that they will not hit your car with theirs even with it protruding from the bay.
Smile and wave, walk away from car.

And for the other posters - No! I will not trade my car for an i10 or a golf, etc.

This usually happens when you parallel park in a perpendicular [side by side] parking bay. I also find the bays a bit on the tight side when doing this...:whistle:

Standard dimensions
Taken in this instance from the Department of Transport “Parking Standards (1990)”
Standard Vehicle
The standard design vehicle has
Length = 4.8m
Width = 1.8m
Turning Circle = 12.4m
These dimensions equate roughly to a 95th percentile dimension coverage for vehicles sold in SA in 1976.
Standard 90deg Bay
Allow lateral clearance of 0.7m between parked cars
Allow front clearance beyond car nose to end of stall of 0.2m

:erm:

That is in place since 1976...
:erm:

Yet I seem to recall parking bays decreasing in size the last few years.

I hate parallel parking... always end up scraping some poor dudes car and having to leave an apology note. Once I had to run off cos the driver saw me and came after me with a baseball bat! Luckily he was fat and couldn't run fast.

Shaun if you park anywhere near me in Durbs, I will shoot you - no questions asked! :)

What car do you drive? In my defence, my merc is very long and it's quite old. :D

You would get a severe klap, and be made to pay for repair(s).

And that is said politely.
