Slightly off-topic but I've always wondered how these fundraising situations work. Does he use money out of his own pocket to climb the mountain (flights, gear etc)? And why even climb the mountain? Why not just raise the funds?

Can I just say, for example, that I want to sail across the Atlantic to raise funds for XYZ and have people start donating?
