Telkom's boasts to Parliament on Friday about its huge profits came back to haunt it when MPs criticised the company for exploiting the public.

MPs from all parties said Telkom was charging prices that were higher than international norms.

Telkom executives were unable to account for the pricing tariffs on Friday, but promised to come back to Parliament with more information.

I love it where they indicate that perhaps they should go on a retreat, away from the media, and they will then explain it.

I wonder why they're so afraid of the media? Oh yes, perhaps because it'll then prove to the public that Telkom is ripping them off, and Telkom certainly doesn't want the public knowing THAT.
 
Perhaps, certain elements within Telkom want the public to know what’s going on. As maybe some of their jobs are on the line and they want to discredit management and the board. Doing this would on the one hand perhaps save this 10% to 15% retrenchment by putting Telkom in the eyes of the media. Secondly as Telkom gets more and more adverse publicity against its mantle of power, the state would want to hasten the SNO as it in itself must be getting flak from all quarters and would want to rid itself of another burden.
But getting parliament to do anything takes time. Just look how long it took the state to roll out anti retroviral drugs.

The problem is protection. Telkom is protected by a few in government who have financial investments there, I'd say. I am guessing now. [}:)] The thing is, where there is vested interest, they will (not unlike the loby groups in the US) try to hamper change in the interest of money. I cannot prove this at this time, so please take this comment with the pinch of salt it deserves. [8)]

Didn't the Reserve Bank close the forward book this year? It was announced, I'm pretty sure of it.

As far as protection goes, it's time the state left Telkom to the wolves. Telkom, by it's own declaration is going to retrench staff at 10% to 15% per year. Telkom should no longer enjoy legal protection from it's competitors, but should go meek out a living like the rest of us.

Government owns 38,7% of Hellkom, so they'll stand back to enable the supreme coffer expansion taking place the last two years. The less your share the more you want, that's understandable, but if it's at the cost of the economy of one of the best countries in the world (best IMHO) it's quite sickening. Ivy should be shot off into the horizon along with the $BC criminals never to be seen again... we'll call them after the big South African Telecoms Crash of 2004.

It would be interesting to know how many Telkom shares each member of the cabinet, parliament and ICASA owns.

I agree with MaD. It is sickening to have someone of Ivy's calibere controlling telecoms in South Africa.

They retrenching people so that their profit margins can be higher, meanwhile our people in SA are getting poorer and rich are getting richer.
So much for Telkom being "Proudly South African".

BTW, just remember one thing. They donated a further R8 million to PSA the other day, just before they announced their financial prowess and their staff reduction. In other parts of the world this could be construed as a bribe.

I have sent an email to both PSA and The Star Newpaper and I'm eagerly awaiting a reply. I will update this post with their response.

Just the other night I was fighting City Power, since we haven't had electricity almost every night for 3 weeks. But all was in vain since nothing has been done about the problem. Not even the opperators could even say what has happened and the best reply was :"We haven't been in contact with our technicians and I cannot say when it will be back on." (This was 3 hour later after the power cut) I then decided to make a petition in the area, but I could only get a handful of people to help, since most people's attitudes were: "What's that going to help?"

My personal view is that the general public here in SA, doesn't make a stand against these companies, because they think their voice won't be heard or that it won't matter, but if we can gather thousands of voices and make people aware more will join in our anti-(goverment)monopoly campaign.

Besides, I think the PSA is all just a scam to increase the liability of South African companies in the eyes of the foreign investors and international companies.
 
Please let us know if you receive a reply as It would be interesting as the last email I sent them has yet to be answered.

Yup, mine as well. But if I haven't received a reply by lunchtime (let's make that 13:00) I'm going to give them a call.
