Password crackdown could decrease Netflix viewers

Netflix Inc. may find out soon just how many of its viewers will agree to pay to use its services.

The video-streaming giant is taking a firmer stance against people sharing account passwords, testing a feature that prompts non-paying viewers to buy a subscription.

A company spokesperson wrote that the test was “designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so.”

This is a difficult one for Netflix. In my opinion, let them do the test and see how it pans out.

On one hand, the crackdown may lead to increased income, as some users who watched at no cost may get their own accounts. But, they will definitely be losing out on viewer numbers as some will definitely not be signing up.

Generally, companies and investors are only after one thing... more money. The headcount may not always be relevant.

So many free streaming service legit or not, never cared about Netflix with More Doug Demuro on YouTube tsek.

Easy to confirm login via email or SMS one time pin.

So, let those people fail the test then...don't take out the subscription.

True, but still a risk and unnecessary expense when you can make use of software monitoring and analyzing IP addresses.
This cost will get pushed down to the end consumer with subscription hikes, I have Netflix and most of the time I cant log into it as it says something to the effect of maximum users on the profile has been reached. Strange part I only shared my password with 2 people

Yeah sorry thats what I meant, I know that there are users on there that I didnt share my password with, mostly being spouses family. There hasnt been anything interesting to watch on Netflix in awhile though, I also have Amazon Prime but hardly use that, only when The Grand Tour puts out a new episode but the spouse prefer it has all the bollywood movies are released on this platform. I personally consume alot of Youtube hence it made sense for me to get Youtube Premuim and skip all the adds.

I share with a family member and pay him for half the cost. If they enforce it guess I will have to fork out for a full subscription. Also have showmax and have been watching a lot on there too so I may alternate services or something.

Why does it matter who uses the account when the user is paying for 4 simultaneous viewers anyway.

If they are smart about it, they'll profile the "offenders" and go after the heavy consumers. This will help improve the conversion ratio. The remaining will either increase their usage and get converted, or be free advertising for the service.

I agree with this move as it should increase competition. Maybe make some room for other services.

They cannot base it on IP addresses. However I have no issue as long as you can verify via email. It will be a pain in the ass though.

What about subscribers using netflix at their home and their office/vacation home. IP addresses restrictions would cause mayor issues with those consumers.

I'm on the basic package with one active device. I'd be damned if I share my password with others and interrupt my viewing time.

And those two people shared it with another two people who shared it with another two people ...
Just change your password and that will sort it out.

Also are you on the Premium tier of Netflix which allows streaming on four devices simultaneously? Basic only allows one screen at a time and Standard is two screens.

I was thinking of changing passwords but I dont use it that often so I guess I would let the persons using it enjoy it, I am on the Premuim tier because of 4K resolution and Dolby Atmos

Are you actually certain you are in fact the primary account holder?
