Hi,

I just thought I'll share this with everyone to make people aware of how easy it is to get stuck and unable to log onto your PC in Windows 8. I sort of forgot over the weekend what my password was and couldn't log on last night. After changing my password in haste on Friday as instructed by Microsoft as they said my account was maybe hacked or compromised. I spent the better past of last nite and most of this morning trying to log onto my laptop. It was easy enough to change my forgotten password on the Microsoft Account on another PC but the laptop I used it on kept asking for the password that I last used on it on Friday. To make a long story short, I tried everything. From burning a a ophcrack cd to trying to log onto command prompt during start up. Anyway after numerous attempts it was as simple as plugging in a lan cable for the laptop to connect to the internet without logging on and my laptop's password was changed automaticly from Microsoft. One wonders how you suppose to enter the Bios as the Boot Manager came up on pressing F12; I then only had 3 options to boot up. CD/DVD Rom and then 2 ip network lines. After it detected ophcrack, I think it assumed its a Trojan virus maybe and then there was no option to boot up on cd/dvd rom. To enter command prompt I still had to supply the old Microsoft Account password which I didn't have so thus could not enter command prompt. So at start-up when the log on screen appears the laptop also didn't connect wirelessly that is why the old password remained in place.

I wonder if there's other people that have maybe experienced the same problem; and isn't it maybe better to revert to windows 7 or can Microsoft log-on be disabled. Anyway the biggest concern was having to reinstall which luckily in the end I didn't have to do. But I'm just wondering why Microsoft have to make everything so complicated.

I turn off "Secure Boot" and bios "UEFI" then it allows me to boot with recovery media like Trinity rescue to reset a password. When done just turn those back on. With some software if your hard drive is not detected you should check if sata mode is set to AHCI and if so set it to IDE temporarily.

I'm not sure if it will work if your set up with a microsoft account.

Here's a tip, if if you're advised to change your password because the company thinks you're hacked or compromised, don't! Unless the company in question got hacked then you should change your password.
Also enable 2 factor authorization.

Thanx for the reply, nice one! I'll try to see if I can turn off 'Secure Boot' and bios 'UEFI'. The bios 'UEFI' kept coming up and that was one of the problems why it wouldn't boot up on CD. And then I'll also try Trinity rescue sometime. If sata mode is set to AHCI then that will also be a problem offcourse.

I have a Lenovo Y500 laptop and I've only been able to enter Boot Manager on hitting the F12 button. The only other way to enter Advance Options was by hitting shift restart. But then like I said earlier you need to still know the old password.

Its fairly easy to remove to Microsoft log-on method and change to standard login
Just go to PC settings -> Accounts and then choose sign on with local account .

The easiest way to recover a windows password is to use a tool called Kon-Boot . Now the new BIO's uses secure boot which prevents booting of unauthorized boot disks so you have to disable it .

To enter "BIOS" press shift and restart the PC
