Hi

Hope someone can help me. At work we use Pastel and is connected on a workgroup via hub. The pastel directory on the server is shared so that all the workstation can open the companies on their side.

No what happens is that the network "appears" to disconnect, i.e. we have 3 companies and switch between them, when I try to open another company the companies is not found. I know that only happens when you disconnect from the server. I have to remove and add the path to the directory again. That sucks as to do that a couple of times a day is really bad. It happens to all the workstations.

Thing is, I know I didn't disconnect from the server. Pastel support claims it's the network and they can't help. How does this 'fictitious disconnect" happen then? Is there a connection timeout build into XP somewhere?

If it happens to everybody is it a setting missing on the server?

PS: we have no IT handyman... :(

Forgot to mention that. The folder is shared and mapped on all the pc's. And the ip's are manuel.

However, this morning i noticed that the 4th company (which I don't work on) is in the manage category and I never added/opened that company before...weird...could it be an ip conflict?

my advise to you would be to set all the computers to let windows assign the ip address

automatic ip addy's

i set up the same sort of thing at a clients office
they have around 50-100 different companies and 5 ppl using those companies

i networked everything to automatic

also run the setup on all the pc's and make sure sharing enabled on all or you might run into problems

We had the same problem - Pastel does NOT play nicely on a network.

We did the map network thing, and assigned static internal ips to the PCs (which is the opposite of the advice above :D ).

i could not agree more. Pastel is a great Package when it works but I have found over the years that it is Technically rubbish and really sux on networks.

Tjorriemorrie - but I'm sorry i cant help all i can say is we have a setup here which is:

server has the data (companies)
a pc has the server license
and we have 2 clients that get the license info from the PC and then get the data from the server via mapped drive.

It take me a half clued up IT idoit two days to work it all out. Pastel told me it would not work that way and i should put the license on the server machine. Well with a bit og chewing gum and MacGyvers penknife i got it working and touch wood it has not broken. for about a year

but man was it a headache.... Maybe if you dont have an IT guy get a Pastel person to check it out.
But first step make sure all mapped drives are staying conenced and no pcs are rebooting and that your network is sound so that pastel cant blame you

Try This

I do IT support for various companies and one of my clients had a similar problem - I found the easiest way to get the pc's to retain the connection was to use 'net use'
- open up a command prompt (cmd)
- now type in net use z: \\computername\sharename /persistent:yes and press enter

Thanks! This is what I was looking for.

Although I think the problem was due to another factor. Me and another person moved recently to the offices, and so we had pastel05 while they had pastel04. Then when I had to leave, there came this lady in that was to upgrade everything. So first we had to convice her that we're not gonna pay thousands of rands for something we already have. Anyway, next morning the problems started, although that was the first day for my station there...

I recently figured out that that biatch didn't install the same sql versions on all the computers. Pretty dumb. I believe it's the pervasive sql that made the errors. I installed the same and latest version on all the workstations and it seems to be running better now. So much for stoopid consultants!

For the network, pastel said we should phone absolute accounting, they said we should phone networkIT. The guy came, was here for 5 min and said no problems, china. So me and my collegue did set up the network correctly, it was the stoopid consultants that don't know how to install the freakin programs!

I set up a wireless network for a client for printer sharing, and now the company list doesn't come up in pastel. Pastel as well as the company files are stored on the same pc.

When you try to open one of the recently used companies from the file menu it comes up with an error message saying that the OS has deleted some files and that the company list will be refreshed, but then nothing appears in the company list.

The only other thing I did on the machine was delete the 6 or 7 printers from the printers and faxes folder and re-install just the 2 that they are currently using on the network.

Any suggestions on getting the companies back into the companies list?

(The network consists of 2 pc in ad-hoc mode with ips manually assigned.)

Above problem solved: Pastels install appears to be tied to the pc name --> change it and your company list disappears. Put the original name back in and Pastel works again:)

I feel for u Guys

I went through HELL with Pastel.

For weeks on end the companies dissapeared and pastel gave me errors saying that my data was corrupt and the guys at the pastel told me to contact some company that does data retrievel on damaged hard drives and stuff like that.

I also have a server with the data on an external drive and about 5 pc's that work on the companies....

I was crying.

Finally sorted it out.

The data is shared and mapped on each pc and the pc with the licence(licence folder also shared) also mapped on all of them.

Then i used the pervasive gateway locater and made the gateway on the server...

Don't remember exact details though.

Butt it works now
