PC A

Win 7 Ultimate 32bit, Pastel Partner 2007 installed as server and registered. (3 User License)

PC B

Win 7 Home Premium 32bit, Pastel Partner installed and registered as workstation via LAN

I have tried and successfully installed workstation on PC B, I mapped the shared Pastel folder from PC A on PC B and then registered the workstation on PC B. That all works fine when I am in the office, what I would like to learn how to do successfully, is accomplish this via the internet and not the LAN.

Is this possible???

I tried this before..but did not work.... Ended buying a site licence from pastel... for standalone pc... sometimes they will just take a licence from your network licences... so you will have 2 licences on network..and 1 site licence... but you will have to phone them to get this done...

You might need site license, maybe try with vpn connection?

My apologies as I did not explain the reason for this, here goes...

Using the LAN User A(server) and User B(workstation) can open pastel and the same company and work, if User A opens invoice 100 when User B opens an invoice it will automatically open up invoice 101. I wish to accomplish this via the internet.

Will having a site license help me accomplish this???

I dont think internet has anything to do about the functionality within pastel... the problem is... Im assuming the company data folder is lying on the server pc.... if you on your pc somewhere else on the internet...accessing the company data folder on the server pc is not really going to work as the database files are too large to be transmitted over the internet..

make sense?

Thanks for the reply.

I have tried the VPN but cant seem to connect from the internet. I have a router at home and at the office, i have forwarded the ports for PPTP as my routers have port forwarding. Can anyone help with how to achieve the VPN setup?

I had a working VPN setup...but the pastel would never want to work ...even though everything else and the network drives would work... if you get it right.. please let me know...

Yes it does and that is what I have been trying to, I have tried using ftp and netdrive to mount the drive on PC B but the drive comes up under the PC B as the server and not PC A which is needed to retrieve the registration information for PC B to be registered as the workstation.

Hi there, can you help me with the VPN setup please?

Remote desktop?

I have teamviewer, all that does is give me control of PC A, i need simultaneous use of PC A and PC B while accessing the pastel folder on PC A from PC B via the internet.

Thanks

You'll need a VPN to make it think it's on the local network.

HOWEVER.

Due to the manner in which Pastel Partner open the entire database across the VPN link instead of just querying it the performance is such that it's almost impossible to use so a futile effort regardless.

A better solution would be to have the user open a Remote Desktop session from the internet to the machine that has Pastel installed. Or go the very expensive route of upgrading to Pastel Evolution or whatever the proper server-based version is called.

Can't do it via internet and also make sure the router/network/nic you have going is on UPS and that both PC's also are on UPS. Pastel Partner DB's get corrupted very quickly by interruptions in network and/or PC connecting to it

I have tried the VPN option once on some very fast 5/5Mbit fibre connections, even then, it timed out and crashed.

Compared that to a MSSQL based accounting package that happily ran across a 384k ADSL. A little bit slower, but now program errors or corruption in 2-3 years

Pastel really needs to show pervasive the door and finish their move to MSSQL. 95% of our Pastel related queries relate to pervasive rather than pastel itself.

Remote desktop is the only viable option

You are going to hit the wall trying pastel with VPN. Remote desktop will be your best option.

Can be done

What you are asking to do would be possible to do via VPN. I know of a few people that managed to pull this off. The thing counting in your favour is the low user count you have (3) and by the sound of it, only one of your users will be working via VPN. If you plan to have more users logging in via VPN, then it might be better to go something like a remote desktop session or similar.

There is some risk involved in this though: If you have a company open and the VPN connection drops, even for a millisecond then you run the risk of your data being corrupted.

I see on many forums people suggest remote desktop is the best solution to using Pastell's substandard software remotely.
My question is:
I have my main Pastel installation on a pc that is only used for Pastel
In shop 1, 2 other computers link to it via a LAN to use it, that works OK, although sluggish at times.
Now I opened another shop in a town 150km away. There are 2 computers that must also connect to the main computer.

If I use a remote desktop connection it is mos like working directly on the main computer , just via the internet
I fail to see how the 2 computers will be able to connect to the main over a remote desktop connection as only one user per time can work on the main installation ?
