So Grinding Gear Games makes this. It is a Diablo clone that has been in open beta since Feb. Firstly a note on GGG. They seem to be a small outfit from NZ, they all just loved D1 and D2 and decided to make their own version.
It is a free to play game, so trying it only requires the download.
Some differences between it and D3.
No AH so trade channel and Forums are how you trade.
No gold Currency, currency is in the form of magical orbs that have the ability to augment gear. There is an orb for just about any reroll of RNG that you can think of.
No class skills. Every skill/ability is "activated" by any class, by putting a gem into your socketted gear. There are Strength, Dex and Intellect based gems that have prerequisite values of those stats. But any class can pick up any type of build because of the way the talent web works. And it is a WEB. There are support gems that can be linked to skill gems to modify them or augment them in various ways. Like turning a fireball into a chain fireball(bouncing 2 extra times one it hits an enemy). Or an Ice spear into a multiple ice spear (3 or 5 projectiles side by side) And even a multi ice spear chain.
The combinations are quite numerous and it is quite fun finding ways to make a Marauder into a spell caster that flings fireballs, but uses his health pool to cast spells and his mana pool to cast auras.
All in all I find the game far more engaging than D3. I play it on hardcore, the first time I have ever tried hardcore in this type of game.
If you have not tried the game yet. And you loved D2, then this is a damn good game.Once you learn the Currency system, and the skill gem system. The game is opened up into something awesome.
