Pay-as-you-Go Data Bundle Discrepancies

Oh, yes: I recommend to rename this thread: MTN DATA CROOKERY. In my view t's not just a discrepancy anymore. If they don't know what a crook is: Mr Zuma should be able to help out on that one.

mtn

according to their dashboard gings

"Their software only writes the data usage to disc when you shut it down. If the software isn't closed in the normal fashion, i.e. you log out, switch off or Eskom work their magic, your data counters will be lower than actual."

so then if its potentially not writing away data usage how can it have a higher reading than net meter it should have a lower reading and not be a gig higher

its just that its not worth wasting my time to do something about this because in this country the consumer is nil and i would get nowhere i can however at least let people know

Their billing system is not connected to the dashboard loaded on your computer at all. You should check with MTN how much you have actually been billed for.

Because of this:
The data cards themselves have a tendency to give higher than actual counters, this mostly happens in low signal conditions, when the connection is unexpectedly terminated or the card switches from 3G to 2G while connected. I think this might be what you are seeing.
For example, let's say you are connected and have downloaded 50MB and your connection drops unexpectedly. The dashboard software adds 50MB to your total, but the card remembers the 50MB, so the next connection you make starts off with 50MB. Let's say you download another 10MB and disconnect normally. The dashboard adds 60MB to your total, but the card still remembers the 50MB, which it will keep adding to every new session you start, until you restart your computer or reset your card.

Bear in mind that this issue only affects the total in the dashboard on your computer, MTN do not bill you for those extra megabytes.

works fine

their dashboard said 2100mb when account cut(2G bundle) thats pretty accurate only problem is NETMETER as per my picture had got to only 1G. the point being its not important what the dashboard says since everyone seems to agree it doesnt work, its about what netmeter says and here im a gig short last time it was 700mb so there is a problem. is it that netmeter doesnt work?

Pay as you go data bundle discrepensies.

MTN is definitely stealing our money!!!!!!

I bought R 420-00 worth of airtime last month and loaded the airtime. I still had some bunfle left on my other sim and was waiting to load the new bundle on the sim. When i did the money was reduced from R 420-00 to R 276-00 with been used at all. I converted the remainder to a smaller bundle and within 2 days it was depleted with very little use. I called the helpdesk and asked for a statement. They sent me forms of about 5 pages to fill in which i did and emailed back. They then promptly refused to send me the statement saying i must prove iu own the sim despite calling them from the sim. I asked how i was supposed to do that and they could not respond. I beleive it is a scam and must be investigated at a very high level. They are no better than common criminals.

Wendy highlighted two points which I had brought up; one was the fact that MTN confiscate unused airtime that passes their woeful expiry period of three weeks for under fifteen rand air time vouchers, and the data inaccuracies.

On the first point, MTN's Mgwani stated that they feel that three weeks is enough time to use your airtime and feel that they don't want customers, "Downgrading" their pay-as-you-go bundles. In other words, stop buying such small amounts!

The second point which is highlighted on your excellent blog received this reply:-

"MTN’s Mgwani sent us a letter of the Network Standard Fast Link Modem Statistics disclaimer which basically states that a number of factors can affect the accuracy of data usage indicators and that MTN wont accept any responsibility or liability for quote inaccurate indication of data."

Basically she ended by saying, "You've been warned", so I guess it ends there and MTN ride off into the lucrative sunset of ripping us off "Wherever we go".

I loaded a 500MB bundle last month, squeezed more than 500MB out of it :D

This month I loaded 1GB, I'll let you know how far it gets me.

MTN’s Mgwani sent us a letter of the Network Standard Fast Link Modem Statistics disclaimer which basically states that a number of factors can affect the accuracy of data usage indicators and that MTN wont accept any responsibility or liability for quote inaccurate indication of data....

Next time I will add an addendum to my contract stating:
"A number of factors can affect the accuracy of my payment every month and I will not accept any responsibility or liability..."
