hey guys, need some advice...

Im looking to buy a new phone, cash, or anyway, i was till I thought of this idea. Im sure im not alone.

say im in the market to buy a Sony erricson k850i, witch is about R5,250.00 (http://www.cacell.co.za/sony-ericss...ath=6&osCsid=47cde318a849163741e7d3c3fa361368)

but now (presumably) Vodacom, or whoever offers this phone on a top up 135. (it probably will happen in the next few months)

thats 135x24months + 202 connection fee., total R3442.

Wow, I saved R1808, and get R135 on my phone for 24months!!!

1. this is only an example, but is it really possible to bypass the system in this way?

2. is it possible to pay out front for a whole contract, once off?

First of all, they will never offer a K850i on TopUp 135. Just take a look at the rubbish phones they are offering now! Now matter how bad the K850i is discovered to be, you won't get a phone like that on TopUp.

As for paying the contract up front, I am sure you can do that if you want to...But you would still have the contract for 24 months. The type of phones you can get on TopUp 135 would be lucky to get you about 2 grand though...

like I said, its only an example...
It there anywhere on the web where i can see an up to date pricelist of what vodacom/mtn, ect is offering now on different pacages?

Yes, it is possible. I've bought a few phones this way.

Back in the day when the N80 was the ****-for-giggles have-to-have phone, it was quite pricey. I got it on special at Vodaworld on a Weekender contract, paid in all the cash upfront, ended up saving quite a bit of money at the time and used the free minutes every weekend.

You have to find the phone on a contract special though, and you are generally looking at weekender type contracts more than say a top up contract.

ok sweet, I was thinking bout that though. Only problem is with top up you can get around bills, and all that, and you cant really go over your limit. how do you convince the people at vodacom to sell you a weekender, out front? did you put a cap on your free minutes once they finnished?

Nope, I didn't put a cap on or anything. I just made sure each month not to go over free minutes, it's not that hard. The bill came every month, and I just paid it. It works out like virtually interest free financing.

What phone do you want exactly? It makes much better sense to buy a phone off a classified website like the MyADSL classifieds, or bidorbuy as the phone is much cheaper.

Taking it on contract, if you don't want the phone in 5 months...you still have to keep paying the contract for 2 years or whatever. Also, they reserve the right to increase contract subscription fees...so it could not work out...depending.

Oh, and you don't convince them to sell you a weekender upfront. You have to apply for the contact with the normal credit terms, and then either just pay all the money upfront, or put it in a seperate bank account, earn some interest and pay monthly.

makes sense....

Im thinking of getting the SE k850i, but dont really want to pay R5000+. Otherwise ive been looking on bidorbuy, the prices seem fair...

Otherwize the SE w880i, the best Ive seen it is R2900...

dont think im gonna get it for cheaper anywhere....
