Pay TV operators object to unbundling

Says who? The only "essential" components of a Tv service are news and education. There are free alternatives. Telkom controls what is arguably an actual service. Provide an argument as to how entertainment is essential then we can talk.

yes, they are over charging and have been doing so for years. They are out of line with the rest of the industry on that point.

But they are also doing the same as the rest of the industry in bundling channels together. There is nothing suspicious there.

The same service is available via 3G - which is not a bundled product like the Telkom option.

Personally I'm in a way kind of with you... Yes I would like to chose my individual channels, but their bundling methodology seems to be out of synch with international norms.

Tatasky and Sky+ bundle channels by genre... so you have a Movies Bundle, Entertainment Bundle, Sports Bundle etc... and you can choose one or multiple of the bundles for your "personalised" package.. and thats more along the lines of what I'd like to see.

Ja, I have no problem with that... I think DSTV should try to meet people halfway on this.

But asking to pay for individual channels is just not going to work. The admin alone would be come a nightmare.

They should just group the packages together like Sport, Kids and Entertainment, New and Current Affairs... and let the Free To Air channels be free, DSTV currently charges us for the SABC channels.

That sounds fair. It is not unreasonable to group the same types together. Or even to even group them as the providers give them.
This is what the Consumer watchdog should be gunning for.
