Hi All,

I have recently opened an online music business www.thesongstudio.co.za that sells childrens music globally.

We are using PayPal as a Payment Gateway for now and have noticed a large drop off rate when users get redirected to PayPal.

From what I understand this is for 2 main reasons:

1. People do not like to get redirected off your site without warning and close the session
2. PayPal seems VERY "members only" when you get there
3. In SA we are limited and need people to set up a PayPal account before processing the payment.

This leads me to my question which is:

Does any-one know of a good Payment Gateway for South Africans ? Features would need to be:

1. "Visually" process payments on our site so as not to give the user the feeling of leaving our site
2. Accept credit cards globally
3. Not make users set up an account to use there credit card
4. Be safe - no brainer
5. Be easy for us to withdraw our funds

Now from what I have read the above may be a bit of a "pipe dream" for us here in SA but any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

Many thanks !

Regardless of payment gateway, it's quite normal to experience drop-off of clients right at the payment stage. It's been noted for years. New customers mostly, repeat customers usually push through.

That's not to say your experience couldn't be improved etc.

I feel that one of the biggest issues we are facing is that the user does not want to neccessarily register with PayPal, but would rather simply enter credit cards details, get verified and leave....
but PayPal seems to force registration in one way or another...

You could say that they are keener to get signups, rather than ushering along your payments...

I agree, I don't think PayPal's redirection should be seen as a problem - in fact I would personally prefer entering my details to PayPal rather then an in house form. Remember to display the PayPal logo under the payment options, etc to prevent some confusion.

FYI, PayPal should be an additional form of payment, not the only one available. I found that most people don't mind being redirected to a credit card processing facility (like VCS) which saves a bit of money on getting your website an SSL and on a static IP address (if you're using shared hosting).

However I did notice a lot more PayPal traffic when we added that to our e-commerce system as a form of payment and think we gained a few customers because of it. Most people out there just want to type in their details, make a payment and go. So they don't want to register with PayPal just to buy something after they (most probably) had to register on your site as well. The inverse of this is those with a PayPal account already finds it more convenient to buy like that too. So you're catering for both the "I want to type in my credit card details now to buy!" type person AND the more computer-savvy type who likes the fact that he doesn't have to remember a 16 digit number, his CVV and expiry date JUST to buy something quickly.

You also deter the impulse-buyers like that. So having Credit Card facilities in place and then adding on PayPal as a form of payment is a nice combo for your site.

@AcidRazor - any suggesstions as to who is decent for the "I want to type in my credit card details now to buy!" process ?? As mentioned before, we are trying to cater to a global audience, and not just local. We did look at MoneyBookers, but their process is pretty much the same as that of PayPal....

MyGate Payment Gateway

Hi SQL,

Please see below my response ( MyGate). www.mygate.co.za

1. You can either host your own payment page using your own SSL page or you can make use of a MyGate payment page which allows you to brand the page to look exactly like your website.
2. MyGate payment gateway allows you to receive payments from all over the world.
3. Users are not required to have accounts to purchase via MyGate'd payment gateway
4. 100% secure platform and we support all four major in South Africa
5. Merchants have their own merchant accounts which allows them to receive funds in real time banking hours.

No pipe dream we can definitely assist were needed.:)

regards,
Faseegh

I wont use Paypal. Due to the limitations of Paypal in South Africa I refuse to use them.

MyGate Payment Gateway

PayPal is a nice option to have for accepting or yet receiving foreign currency, the only issue is that you dont receive your funds immediately and i am sure most merchants are not happy with a 3rd party holding your funds?
MyGate is in advance discussion with releasing a true solution for foreign currency by integrating into International banks.

With regards to clients moving from your site why not just purchase your own SSL and the client will never leave your site in the payment process.

Rgds.
