Hey all.

I owe SARS some cash. However, with Covid and business taking a massive knock, they want a payment schedule from me.

Have any of you applied for one at all? How long did they grant you (Over how many months).

I would like to know what is possible (As in what they tend to accept), before I give them an answer.

Our business was given 6 months. We tried for a year but they said no. It can vary depending on circumstances though.

Start with what's most comfortable and see what they say.

SARS generally does not accept any payment terms longer than 6 months.

A friend of mine about 5 or so years ago owed around R400k plus in years of arrears. He went and saw them and gave a massive story of how he cannot pay this amount and each month it keeps getting bigger.
He was polite and sorrowful all the way through the conversation with the person.

They came back to him a month later and said to pay about R80k right now and we clean the slate for you.
He begged and borrowed and did exactly that overnight.

I forgot to add
SARS is forgiving if you approach them.
Don't wait for them to come knocking on your door and you keep ignoring

Been in constant contact with them since I got the letter.

To be honest, they have not been the friendliest towards me. I told them that I have been struggling towards the end of last year, and then with Covid, it truly hurt the business...no income for three months. They stated that due to the fact that there were arrears from last year, they don't want to hear that Covid is an excuse...:)

I think the lady I am dealing with is just tired of the year to be honest. Who knows. I mean, I want to pay, and it is my obligation to do so, but over 6 months is almost impossible. My fault though, obviously.

I owed about 30K provisional at some point.I made an appointment and the guy was pretty cool. I think I paid it over 3 - 6 months.

Tell them you are in a very difficult situation and have been hit very hard financially and still need to pay tax in the meantime etc. etc.

They will let you know if it is not going to work. Although they would like to have your money so will probably consider your excuses and make a decision.

If you already owed then before lockdown, I doubt that excuse is going to work.

On the other hand I have been waiting for a R7300 refund from 2009. The excuse is that the assessment for 2004 was re-assessed and documents are outstanding. What they are no-one knows

I am surprised they can go back so far

Not quite what you asked, but worth pointing out that some employers (finance esp) will see any kind of "arrangement" with creditors as a black mark. Showed up every year on the annual "I hearby confirm I still not a criminal" confirmation forms....

I doubt it's a big deal for most employers but FYI just in case
