My aunt is looking to upgrade her work pc- her tech has quoted her for a pc and I was wondering if it is overkill.

its going to be used to run pastel. two computers will also connect to it and run pastel off of it.
Its also handles the emails for the office and the other usual office requirements.

the guy has quoted for the following pc
aerocool gaming case
intel core i7 2600 3.4ghz
intel boxdh67bl motherboard
dvd writer
2 GB ddr3 1333
1TB hard drive
520w power supply
geforce GT430 1gb
windows 7 professional.

How much did he quote? I would replace the i7 with i5 and add 2GB more ram. Also why does an office PC need a graphic card, get an integrated mobo.

he quoted R7500, but I was wondering why you would need a gaming case, fancy graphics card and 520w power supply- surely that just adds to the cost.
someone else recommended that they get 64bit windows and up the ram to 8GB- I can understand it if you doing 3d rendering, but will there be any difference in everyday usage

32bit and 64bit cost is R30 or so, so bump it to 64bit.

If other PC's are running Pastel off that one, then I'd also go for 4Gb RAM.
An i5 2400 would be able to handle the processing, but it depends on the number of batches that'll need to run etc.
There is no need for the gaming case and a graphics card. Just get a normal CoolerMaster case that can take heat out.
You can also lower the PSU to a 400W even

How important is the data being processed? You should perhaps look at 2x 512Gb HDDs in RAID for backup purposes if it is critical data.

That looks ludachris for an office PC. An i3, 4GB's RAM, Simple Motherboard with integrated grpahics, 500GB HDD, some simple case would do. Maybe a special network card if 2 PC's need to connect to it.

+1

This pc tech guy should be fired. An i7 for office work??? 1TB GT430??? Insane.

Aso if u build up ur self I Jan guarantee u kan u ull build it at less expense. The 500gb is r450 n 1tb is r600 so I Sunday get a 1tb unles u gna use da Ada 500 as a bak up

Ya i wouldn't get more than an i5 with integrated graphics, 4GB ram, and 2x500GB or 2x1TB drives and raid them (depending on how much data you need to store).
Get a 350w PSU, that is atleast 80+ and you set to go..

EDIT:
CPU: i3 2100
MOBO: Intel H67BL Bearup Lake
RAM: 2x 2GB Corsair
Case: CM Elite 342
PSU: Corsair cx430
HDD: 2x 500GB Seagate (sata6GB)
OS: Windows 7 64bit professional

Total R4755.36
Add another ~R170 for DVD drive
and ~R60 for a 120mm fan to put in the front of the case to blow over the hard drives

+1 to nakedpeanut's suggestion.

If the technician can give us hard evidence that Pastel would require a much better CPU, like the i7 2600 for instance, then we can adjust the recommended PC for you.

Our financial person uses a Pastel on a cheap laptop with a Celeron dual core CPU. The only thing that we upgraded was his RAM from 1GB to 3GB and now he doesn't have any issues with the laptop any more.

Nakedpeanut's build looks perfect for her setup. Just make sure the 2x HDD's are setup in RAID 1. That way all her data is completely backed up and there is no chance of loosing it all.

We actually forgot to mention that they should also get an off-site backup of the Pastel data too, which is better than running 2 identical HDD's in RAID 1 (mirrored), since identical drives have a bigger chance of failing at the same time (like due to faulty firmware) than ones from different brands.
