Hi,

Tonight, I decided to build a new rig. All went well, except for two thing...I touched the thermal paste on the CPU fan. Wiped my hand on a cloth, but noticed that there was a bit more paste on my one finger still, after picking up the mother board. Now, there was finger marks on the bottom of the Mobo, but couldn't see any thermal paste on the Mobo. Should I be worried?

Also, when I put in the CPU, it made a bit of a squeak. Should I be worried?

Also, I installed the stock cooler of a i7-4770K on my i5-5670K, will this be an issue?

Eeeek thermal paste can be a bugger at times :) As long as you can get any nasty visible traces cleared, I would say you are safe.

As for the squeak.. yeah heard it before , but that's on AMD when I close the CPU latch. Think Intel's pins are on the mobo and not on the CPU.

The pins are definitely on the Mono. So I should be fine?

If you see fire, run !! Jokes. I'm sure it will be fine, besides not much you can do now. Power it on for a bit and switch it off for 30 mins.. and if it powers on after the nasty ones have settled down.. clear coast :) Well that's my theory, don't quote me on it :)

With that small amount of thermal paste, there probably won't be any issues. Double-check that it doesn't use any metal additives and that it isn't on any of the pins on the bottom of the board because that could cause some minor rusting issues.

As for the cooler, that's fine. The ones in retail boxes are actually identical.

Thermal paste is a bitch to get off but it's harmless really.

Slight thread hi-jack, but on topic, is it necessary to buy thermal paste when building a rig from scratch, from what I read the CPU already has thermal paste on..Disclaimer I'm a noob that'll be building my first rig from scratch in a week or 2(Just waiting for all my parts to arrive)

The CPU doesn't always come with thermal paste.
Either way it's dirt cheap so just pick some up before the install.

Thermal paste on the mobo, no biggie. As longs as there is no direct line of paste between solder points.

They do make that squeak on top of the CPU with that clip you need to close. Just a metal on metal squeak, but it is an indication that the CPU is nice and snug.

Stock cooler is no problem, unless you decide to overclock that beast.

I think all Intel CPUs come with a stock coolers and they have paste on it already. I haven't bought AMD in 5 years, so I can't say anything around that. Also can't say with regards to high-end Intel CPUs (the 2011s).

With aftermarket coolers, most well known brands like CM come with thermalpaste. However, some aftermarket coolers don't come with paste, in which case you have to buy some. Whenever you are buying a cooler, it's easy to find out if it comes with paste or not.

Protip:

Use methylated spirits to clean the thermal paste off the Heatsink and buy your own and apply a dot of it to the CPU.

That thermal paste that they provide is junk and it will dry up and become dust.

It's going to run 12 hours a day, for 7 years minimum :p So I'll eventually (Read: Within the next 4 months) remove the silly stock cooler, and put a H100i on there. For now though, the stock cooler will do.
