Sometimes when I want to shutdown my PC, it doesn't switch off. I click on start, shutdown, turn off and everything looks normal. It gives me the light blue screen telling windows is shutting down, I hear my screen go click and it goes black but my box is still on. Lights, fans everything.

Normally I hold in my power button to finish the shutdown but if I were to push my reset button and go back into windows and try shutting down again..... it does.

I thought it might be windows itself but after formatting and re-installing it still gives me problems. Not every time but more often than not. What's going on?

thats strange ive heard of heard of windows saying saying shutdown and never does

but never heard of windows shutting down and the pc not

That is odd that the screen goes off and the box stays on even after windows has shut down....

Are u sure that the blue screen is not there, just the monitor is off? Try turning the monitor back on and seeing if windows is still stuck at the shutdown screen...

Check your bios to see if anything has been changed.

I'll try switching the monitor off and on again to see what happens. PSU is a new one. Will double check the BIOS as well.

It never used to do this. Started a couple weeks ago. My problem is that it doesn't do it all the time. When my PCs been on for a while it does it.

Make sure your power schemes are correctly configured, right click on desktop, select properties, click screensaver, click power. If it's a desktop pc it should work fine on home/office desk profile. If it's an older system, make sure you have apm enabled.

Have you ran a checkdisk yet? This also seems to fix alot of shut down and startup issues:

Open My Computer, right click on C drive, select properties, click on tools and click on check now. Select both options so that there are checkmarks, click on start. Click on yes at the next dialogue and restart the pc, wait for checkdisk to complete, don't press any keys(at the start or end).

It takes quite a while to complete, dependant on the hard disk size. If all the above failed, visit http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/ Register and start a new thread, detailing all the problems and full system specs :)

It may also be an overheating issue. On a few occations when I've set my shutdown temperature values to low on my mobo, the exact same thing happens. Windows will shut down but the PC keeps power going to the fans etc until the temperature falls within the limit and only then does it turn off completely.

It sounds like an ACPI problem. Get the latest BIOS update from your mobo manufacturer.

Strange that it only started recently though... but BIOS problems can be strange.

@teraside: Haven't run checkdisk yet. Will also look at my power scheme.
@Thorin: Doubt it's a temp problem, my pc idles at less than 30ÂşC now that it's winter. :) But I've left it alone like that for like 15min and it still doesn't shutdown.
@me: Newest drivers are actually out. So I might as well get the mobo updated.

try repairing your windows , with your installation CD , some of your system32 files have gone corupt

I wouldn't do a repair if I were you, sorry neogeo, but the fact is more damage will be done. A repair, or repair install could be worse than just fixing the problem, if you really want to repair within windows, run sfc. Press F1 and type in SFC, it should give you a walkthrough on what to do.

It checks all corrupt files :)

Sorry, F1 gives you command lines,

@ run, type sfc /scannow

Well if the BIOS update doesn't fix it (and I'd be surprised if it didn't), then I'd suggest unplugging each of your peripheral devices and trying to suspend after removing each (mouse, keyboard, etc.)

Then you could do the same with internal cards, sound, and gfx, if you have a spare gfx card you could put in there. One of them could be preventing the suspend procedure from completing.

But BIOS is the first port of call -- you should be able to use the nice ASUS utility to flash it from within windows.

I'd check the casing's reset and power cables on the mainboard. Perhaps they are not inserted correctly.

When an ATX powersupply is connected to power but isn't connected to the mobo, is it supposed to go on or stay off?

Logic says it's suppose to go on :)
Im just wondering, cos my one friend as a similar problem. His windows will shutdown and the screen will go blank HDD's will go off, but the PSU and all the fans stay on, and when he then presses the power button the computer comes back on and boots as if its just been turned on. the only way for him to turn his computer off is by unplugging it.

And I was just wondering whether it's his PSU thats stuffed, cos even when its disconnected from the mobo, when you plug the power in, it comes on, without being given the signal to do so by the mobo.
