PC doesn't want to shut down??

Im just wondering, cos my one friend as a similar problem. His windows will shutdown and the screen will go blank HDD's will go off, but the PSU and all the fans stay on, and when he then presses the power button the computer comes back on and boots as if its just been turned on. the only way for him to turn his computer off is by unplugging it.

And I was just wondering whether it's his PSU thats stuffed, cos even when its disconnected from the mobo, when you plug the power in, it comes on, without being given the signal to do so by the mobo.

I had the same problem but It's one of my SCSI drives that had a pagefile on it that went into suspension mode and locked the PC, try moving the Pagefile to a diff HDD.

I have had first hand experience of psu's doing what you suggest, particularly with pre-built pc's from stores like Game and so forth. The system sounds like it's old, I would check if there are other severe problems with power, drives not working and so on. If nothing's wrong I wouldn't worry about it. It could be that some manufacturer decided it's better if the psu is always on, and in sleep mode, lol. I have encountered it alot. I had a friend which ran on a psu that did the same thing for three years. It just stopped working one day. So it could be manufactured that way, or a flaw. Hard to tell.

Thats what he's probably going to do. The PSU is a no name brand 300W he got with his computer from a computer shop in town, so and everything suggests its the PSU.

If the PSU stays on when disconnected from the mobo then it's definately the PSU. In a regular PSU the green wire in the big bundle of wires needs to be connected to a black one for the PSU to switch on. When not connected, PSU should go off. You can test this with a paperclip

I think it's safe to say that if it doesn't do this all the time then it's probably not any hardware fault. If reinstalling windows doesn't help then no amount of system file checking (sfc) will either. If it only does this after being on for some time then it's probably a system instability problem. Have you added or removed any ram lately or changed a pagefile size. If so you could have a damaged memory module. But since windows shuts down completely and only the pc stays on it's probably a corrupt bios program. A reflash should fix it, but while you're at it you might as well replace it with the newest version. And be sure to check for virusses BEFORE flashing the bios.

If none of this helps you could try removing and reinserting all your hardware components and also press all insertable chips firmly into their sockets (this includes your cpu).
