PC freezes for a few seconds every few seconds

Hi there I have been searching for a solution to this problem for a long time now and find myself without an answer, so I thought maybe someone here could help me.

When I put my pc on last night it started normally but when windows started up it froze - which wasnt something I have never experienced, usually I restart my PC and the problem was gone - this time the problem wont go away, even in safemode.

My PC specs are:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300
Asus EP45-DQ6 Motherboard
2 Gigs Transcend 1066 MHz
1x80gb SATA Western Digital harddrive
2x500gb SATA Seagate HDD
XFX 8800 GT
600 WATT PSU (not sure of brand)

The only thing that has changed in the last month is my CPU.

Ive tried a system restore, CHKDSK, memory tests and have scanned for spyware, adware and viruses with no results. The Event Viewer shows no errors.

I would normally reformat but I am atm without a windows cd (away from home) and without the means to obtain it

Any advise or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

And that was put on properly, with thermal goo, cooler seated 100%, all the clips attached, running within spec temps? I ask 'cos your description of the symptoms points to cpu overheating.

Edit: or your psu is dying.

Well my realtemp tells me my cpu is temperature is 45 on average, but when it freezes it jumps to about 52. As far as I know I put on enough thermal paste and the heatsink isnt movable at all

That sounds OK. Process of elimination then. Have you got another power supply to test with? Is this Vista? Vista, as you might have discovered in your efforts to find a solution, has a lot of issues with drivers, hardware and freezing. Mainly wireless nics and sound cards.
 
No I am using XP, as I mentioned it has done this before when I had my old cpu (6300) but then it would resolve once I restarted my PC
 
I also had a similar problem. My PC kept on freezing for 5 to 15 seconds every now and then. a Friend suggested I put in my memory voltages and timings in manually in the bios.
That sorted you the problem for me.
Have you tried that?

Google your RAM. Or look on the manufacturers website. Just be sure to use the correct settings! Mine was 2.1V @ 4.4.4.12, but im pretty sure yours will differ!

If your RAM is eg, 1.8v and your BIOS only has 1.795V and the next jump is 1.805V, always use the higher voltage setting. Using the lower setting can give you some trouble, specially if you have more than 2x Ram sticks.
 
Maybe try reset to defaults in the bios before messing with timings, otherwise I'm not sure what else it could be.
 
It could be any one of a number of things.

When it happened to me last year it turned out to be a failing primary hard drive.

But it could also be your RAM, your motherboard, a faulty driver, a virus, etc...

Not much help, I know... but there it is.
 
+1. I am suspecting a failing external HDD (Windows 7 actually told me its failing!) and when it is switched on I get momentarily freezing, but when it is off it does not happen!

W7 amazes me more and more...
 
Thanks for all the replies I am going to organise another primary drive tomorrow and see if it'll work
