Specs - Quad core amd 955 BE
4GB corsair DDR RAM
GT 550w Corsair PSU (I think it was 550)
5770 radeon GPU
1 TB hdd cant remember brand - too lazy to open up.
Windows 7 Nvidia edition

Pc has slowed down tremendously - GPU has always been dodgy its a club3d card - have to ramp the voltage to 1.2 otherwise almost all cards come up with "Driver stopped" responding error)

PC makes a fair amount of noise when doing things (opening programs etc) think thats the hardrive. Had a blue screen yesterday.

Recently installed AVG thats about the only major change ive made to it recently but with current specs shouldnt do anything.

In addition Windows media player is screwing around (freezes once opened) VLC/Media player classic are fine.

1st step is check if it's software related.

or another cd bootable Linux OS.

Systems diagnostics

Remember to change the boot sequence in your Bios. (you might know this:-)
You can also run Windows in safe mode and check if problem still occur.

If problems persist it surely hardware.

Windows 7 Nvidia edition?

Do you have a discrete motherboard or an all in one? In which case you could run the pc without the GPU.

There is also tools Windows have to do a RAM diagnostic.

Also check for bad sectors on you HDD

Well case is pretty clean inside, cpu has an after market cooler but never overclocked, its not due to the nvidia addition of Windows its run wonderfully for 3 years, but I guess good chance software related as its only effecting specific programs, will try a defrag always thought that was useless, will create a partition so long as well to back up any important bits n pieces, thanks all.

If it is only certain programs I assume you are referring to heavy duty CPU intensive programs? Could be heat related. The hotter the slower... I would ge a good thermal bond with silver in it or something similar and reseat the CPU and if possible test out a better cooling solution. Even if it worked well for years sometimes just the addition of an extra drive could change the cooling dynamic of the machine. Blow it out properly, make sure the cooler fins inside are clear of debree and add another chassis fan drawing in more fresh air or something...
