Having just finished installing windows on my new pc, i had just plugged in another hard drive into the sata port and when i started up the pc started to smoke. The pc was working at this time as i could see on the screen.(I had been out of the room for about 20seconds) I quickly unplugged the power plug from the pc but some of the cables had melted already as well as the end of the one "plug" running from the psu.:(:( Not sure what happened, does any one have any ideas.

Is it your PSU wire (molex connection) that melted?
Was your PC on when you plugged in the HDD? OR was your pc off and just plugged to the mains?
Your post isn't that clear, although i suppose you in a panic.. haha :)

If it is just your psu wire, just cut it and put a new molex on an you good to go :)

pc was unplugged. Its quite a few cables the have melted the conduit off. (The cables used to power other hdd's etc) Tho only not the cables plugged in to the HDD's

@EchoZA. Its a plug running from the psu with the white plastic ends. Used to plug into the plug which powers the HDDs etc. It wasn't plugged into anything

Sounds like a faulty PSU, or a Molex plugged/forced in wrong :(

no plugs were forced in wrong i double checked. I just dont understand why the main burn seems to have taken place in the middel of the cable? could this be part of a faulty psu? I have an unbranded chassis and it came with a super channel psu.

Unbranded chassis, unbranded PSU... could possibly have been the last item you added to the PSU chain overloaded it???

It could very well be a faulty, or failing PSU. OR, it was overloaded. Or, the SATA cable is busted and shorted out. You do know that you're not supposed to bend SATA cables around corners and directly on the plug, right?

possibly, would this cause it to burn in the middle of the cable?

Running an i7 2600, 4gb ram, ati 5770, a 1tb hdd and i added the 500tb hdd. The psu is a "450w"

Edit. What chance do i have of getting this repaired. Got the pc from Axiz

450w would be fine for that if it was a decent PSU, you'd have to google to see how much wattage yours can provide.. but my guess would be a faulty PSU/cable..

EDIT: it is quite worrying to see only SA sites pop up when you google "superchannel psu" lol.. But go buy a decent 500w corsair PSU and you'll be sorted for the next few builds!

ok thanks for the help. So what chance do i have of this replaced?

Smoke is what makes electrical appliances work. When the smoke escapes the appliance will not work properly. This rule is good for any product that runs on electricity.

so what you saying is that the pc is bust?

If you don't come right... let me know, I will donate you a PSU, as long as you collect. I am in DBN as well!
