Hi guys, I am in desperate need of some help.

About a year ago I built my own pc. It has worked great up until about a month ago, when it suddenly just died. As if someone had pressed the manual restart button on the tower.

Since then, it has progressively gotten worse. Yesterday it must have died at least five times. At first I thought it might be the CPU overheating, as I do a lot of hardcore video rendering. But it has been getting worse and I haven't been doing any CPU intensive work over the past few days.

I am in a bit of a pickle, as I have a project due towards the end of November and my computer is dying!

The specs are:
Core i7 2600k 2nd gen
Intel DH67GD motherboard
8gigs ram
Nvidia Geforces GTS450
550watt Speed power supply
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
1tb Seagate Baracuda 7200

Any help would be much appreciated!

If it was the CPU that overheated then it would give you random blue screens and reboot whenever.

Unless by "dying" you mean "rebooting" and not just turning off entirely (aka dying)

I'd check your power supply if I were you. check the heat, you should be easily able to determine if it's overheating by just touching your case, if not then it's probably just a short in the psu or something, make sure your cables etc is plugged in correctly, a loose cable in the psu can mean rebooting randomly if it moves or if your feet kicks the cable maybe.

Check for bad capacitors on motherboard:

Try another PSU to test the power supply. Can also have bad caps in PSU.

Download free Memtest+ memory scanner and check RAM.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think it is most probably the PSU. Just phoned a mate and he's got an extra one I can use to try it out. Anyone know of a place I can get a good deal and speedy delivery/pick up of a new PSU. Possibly a 550-650 watt. And a decent brand, not one that's gonna die after a year.... Thanks

Hi There,
A good clean out and checking the fans is the first that I would do and I would use a compressor to do that (But not full blast) That gets rid of the accumulated rubbish. Do use the other tools suggested above to test memory and temperature and if still failing then start with the PSU. You can use this site to input details of your configuration and it will show you the size of PSU that you need.

Good Luck

Tim

There is Sybaritic http://sybaritic.co.za/store/ they take a day or so to process the order. Fairly reasonable. There is also prophecy and landmark computers, both of which i have never bought from so i cant tell on speed.

I've had a Cooler Master CM650w psu for nearly 5 years now and its held out ok. The other option is a Gigabyte power supply.

IMO this would be my choice

good luck with the project :)

As far as I know Wootware are in Cape Town. Have a look at this PSU here: Corsair CX600 Builder Series Power Supply

However I recommend you get this one instead if Wootware can't get it for you: Corsair CX600 V2

This one is even better since it comes with a 5 year warranty which is currently on a good special: Corsair TX650M

Rebel Tech are in JHB, but it shouldn't take that much longer to get your PSU, maybe about a day longer than Wootware.
