PC Keeps restarting during XP RE-Installation

THank you. would the backup utility be part of Ubuntu? Or can i just select all folders on C and copy to the 500 gig? coz as i say the c drive is only 70 or 80 gig big, so all will fit on the 500 gig which has about 300- available?

Ah, so you have an external 500GB drive? Even better, then it's a simple copy and paste procedure. I thought the 500GB was your internal hence resizing partitions etc which is no longer required and makes things a lot simpler.


It's not a backup utility, it's file browser/manager like windows explorer you use to browse your hard drive/files.


Is someone going to download the Ubuntu CD or are you just going to get a copy from someone?
If you download it remember to burn the files as a ISO image to the disc, just writing the file to the disc does not work!

Im going to download it. ....so it downloades as an iso, then I burn the ISO to disk? Or does it download as normal, and i need to convert to ISO and then burn to disk?

Any burning software should be able to burn the ISO directly. Nero does, which is a typical standard. If your laptop is running Windows 7, I think, though could be mistaken, that native Windows pops up a dialog asking if you want to burn it. If you don't have any DVD/CD burner, go to www.sourceforge.com and download InfraRecorder, which is free. :)

You burn it as an ISO image, most burning software has the option to burn as an ISO image. You don't convert anything.

Just download one of these:
http://ubuntu.mirror.ac.za/ubuntu-release/10.10/ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso
http://ftp.leg.uct.ac.za/pub/linux/ubuntu-releases/10.10/ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso

Same thing, just different local sites.

She's using XP. Win7 will handle ISO files fine though.
ImgBurn is also free (6MB) and easy to use http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
 
Sounds easy enough...Thank you to all for your help. Will download the burners -
laptop has Vista ;-( hate it....anyway will dload that and then get the live cd for Ubuntu

You will not believe my bad luck...really!! My internet was giving me grief last night, so my download of UBUNTU kept failing!!!!!! We have uncapped@384kbps, and I'm sharing my fathers connection, so its so slow at the best of times, but last night for some reason it was slow to nothing!!

Will try download it with a torrent tonight, then at least wont lose download if internet disconnects....

Im thinking of getting my own uncapped 384kbps - as its not expensive, but if you include the telkom line rental, etc - its like R500.00 per month, compared to now, where its free for me as using my dads...

Use a Download manager like Getright to download the ISO. Add multiple sites to it as mirrors and set it to use 10 segments and it will download at max speed.

I seem to recall that XP needs to restart at certain points and will happily continue. The registry is updated to show the install path, which becomes the default. It isn't a perfect install process and may need some nudging. Problems can occur in laptops, especially, because they need some drivers straight away and if there's no windows yet, it can trigger restarts.
 
Hi Lounger. Thankyou for that....do u mean, copying the current xp disk and using it...or getting a newer version?
 
Borrowing a copy. Apart from ironing out the install, they also have the latest service pack included.
 
Is it not worth checking out the Hiren's Boot CD again?
380 odd MB, which i'm pretty sure is smaller than the Ubuntu?

+1 for a newer XP & for getting a download manager - Download Accelerator Plus works hundreds.
 
newer versions do not always work with older version's keys.
 
thanks everyone. I will definatly download the accelerator, as well as HIRENS BOOT CD. ( I download the entire cd heY/ I see there are hundreds of tools listed?)
