Was thinking of getting a 24" samsung lcd screen for a TV instead of a TV. Reasoning being:

  • we sit relatively close to the tv
  • costs R2000
  • no tuner - so no license required
  • good definition

The question is:

I still have an ancient 51cm crt tv. Is 51cm the width, or the diagonal of the screen?.. just trying to get a visual idea of how they will compare in size.

51cm is the diagonal. But your old TV is probably non widescreen, meaning a 24 inch widescreen might not be as high.

Its because they use different aspect ratios. 4:3 for a non widescreen, 16:9 for a widescreen. You can work out the other dimensions using what you know the diagonal to be, and Pythagoras's theorem.

What will you be usting as a tuner then?
Just make 100% sure your new screen have the required inputs.

AFAIK a 32" 16:9 should be the rough equivalent height of the old 51cm CRT's. The 51cm is measured diagonally on the CRT's.

I had a 74cm and replaced with a 40", which worked out the same height...

according to my calculations

a 51cm tv has an area of 1248.48cm and a 24"lcd screen has an area of 1587.90cm if the 51cm and the 24" are measured diagonally.
so the lcd screen trumps the tv. thats not even considering what happens when I pop in a 16:9 dvd and it gets scaled down to fit on the screen.

I consider not having a tuner as a bonus.

Unless you buy an expensive IPS panel (about R6000 for a 24 inch). But then, LCD TVs use the same kind of panels (TN panels) so they are really the same thing anyway.

Hi,

I'm doing the same but looking for a 23.6 rather. Look at this.

http://www.displaywars.com/23,6-inch-16x9-vs-24-inch-16x10

and this google search. http://www.google.co.za/#hl=en&source=hp&q=23.6+vs+24&meta=&aq=1&aqi=g9g-m1&aql=&oq=23.6&fp=5c2097210aa4e001

edit: forgot to mention. We are already using a 17" flatscreen for most movie viewing. So a 23.6 will be perfect.

I'm using the Samsung T240 for PC and TV (through a tuner). i was worried about viewing angles but was pleasantly surprised. Left to right viewing angle is quite wide, and while the above and below viewing angle is much less, you won't really view the screen from the ceiling or floor. So, for me it works great.

The T240 is a 16x10 ratio, which for me is better than the 16x9 as you get more screenspace for documents and stuff, while the black bars with fullscreen movies are not bothering me at all, I don't notice them.

I found that my 20" LCD felt larger because there were no black lines on the top and bottom (since the 51cm was 4:3 aspect ratio) when playing DVDs
