My HDD is partitioned into 3. One with Win7 I use solely for gaming, one with Win XP and the third is just Data

Yesterday while surfing the net in XP I got multiple data write errors and XP seized up completely. I restarted and again the same problem. The diagnostic test came up and showed this.

Basically my PC in meltdown.

So I loaded up Win7 and it showed no warnings at all except all the icons bar the recycle bin were gone, the other two partitions were shown the correct x amount full but when I accessed them it said "folder is empty". Strangely n the partition with Win7 all my game files were gone too. I then put the drive in a my USB adapter case and plugged into my laptop and all the files showed up and worked.

EDIT: so it's a virus.

That program is a virus/malware.

Run superantispyware and malwarebytes antimalware.

Then when everything is back in order you are going to have to one by one make all your files unhidden. Let us know what happens.

I suppose that's a relief. I have an updated Antivirus and run superantispyware and malwarebytes often. I had logged into steam for the first time in months a little while before this happened ironically because of that hacking issue. :wtf:

I think I'll just format everything.

No need to. When your done there your pc will be cleaner than ever. Nothing can survive mbam, SAS, TDSkiller and Combofix

A serious infection can never be cleaned 100% as there are many more variants than the anti virus apps can deal with. Often they find GENERIC matches.

Reformat, reinstall.

Would you feel comfortable doing online banking post a cleanup?

don't bank from my PC. I've been meaning to format for ages. I'll have to change my security measures. I use AntiVir ,superantispyware , malwarebytes and this thing still got through.

So obvious it was a virus. Had a migraine for 3 days so that didn't help. Still don't get how Win 7 is affected by this

It's a 'Windows diagnostic' virus. I knew a guy who fell for it hook line and sinker. He even paid up lol

Windows Diagnostic implies the bogus PC analysis and optimization tool that shows fake data in order to scare you into thinking that there is a serious problems with your PC. Windows Diagnostic generally penetrates to PC by means of Trojans that show fictitious error notifications and security warnings on the attacked PC. All such messages will claim that there is something really with your PC hard drive and then offer you to download and install a “remedy” that can supposedly fix the problem. When you click on of these alerts, Windows Diagnostic will automatically be uploaded and installed to your workstation.

I don't recall any offers. I just saw the errors and shut down. If I had taken the time to read it all it would have been obvious. *facepalm*

Don't think that a format can cure everything. Quite a few viruses can survive a format, especially a quick format. Dunno about this one.

One piece of code that's made my life immeasurably easier: Acronis True Image. I always create an image of a new clean install. If needed, I can restore the system in minutes. In fact, I put a system image on the Acronis SecureZone (like a laptop's restore partition) - it's inaccessible to malware, and always there in case I need it.

I still can't figure out how Win 7 got affected by the virus. Why where files hidden there too but other than that no sign of any false alerts while XP went into meltdown

yes it can.
You can do banking and be infected without you knowing it. Aaaaaaaaaand a format doesnt remove a bootsector virus plus how many of us go back up data format then copy the stuff back?
Format is a good idea but clean the malware out first before you do it.

It simple. AV's doesnt protect you when you click on a infected link simple. They get thru with browser exploits as well as flash and java exploits. But I tell you what. Im a paid user of malwarebytes and I got a Super antispyware license for free over at wilders security. I use malwarebytes so inbox me and ill send you the license reg. Its only lying here and running down dont want to waste it.

LOL, Hard-drive rotation speed decreased by 20% Classic line. Need to remember that one for future diagnostics.

My advice the the original poster is this:

Format like the others said. Many viruses mess with the security settings in Windows. Reverting everything after can be tedious or impossible depending on the damage done.

I wouldn't bother with these other products, use Microsoft Security Essentials in the future, it's free and a good product. It'll also keep the Windows Spyware scanner up to date and they work in tandem.

 :wtf: "paid" user

Gnome: Malwarebytes Pro

Great program that! Neglected to use (install) it on my pc when I helped someone else on my work computer (which has Symantec installed.....good lord I hate that AV...) and got zapped. I was in a hurry and stupid as per normal.

Once I had my PC up to normal, first three software I installed were AVG Free (I'm a cheapskate), Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware.
