Help...

I was starting my computer this morning. But it won't let me. It Just gives me this message:"Secondary Slave Drive - ATAPI Incompatible"

Anyone know what the problem must be...?
 
What ATARI are you running, the 2600 or what?
 
You'l have to excuse me for asking cos I'm not farmiliar with this kind of "lingo". what is a ATARI?
 
Here are my computer features
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 (Socket 775)
2Gb DDR2 667MHz (4 x 512Mb Sticks)
160Gb Seagate 7200rpm Hard Drive
Sony 18x DVD Writer (Brand New)
450Watt PSU
ASrock ConRoe945G-DVI Motherboard (Link)
Small Form Factor case with Temperature Sensors

Insert Invaders cartridge, switch on - off - on - off - on in quick succession, then you get double fire (worlds fist game cheat)

Your secondary slave drive?

is that where your DVD Writer is plugged in?

Your seagate hard drive? Is it an IDE drive? (long wide grey cable) or a SATA drive? (thin cable usually red). Is your DVD drive plugged into the same cable as your hard drive?
 
I'm using a SATA drive... My DVD is not plugged in the same drive as hard drive. its plugged in the long wide grey cable

OK, where on the long grey cable is it plugged in? at the end or near the middle? make sure it is plugged in firmly both ends.

and... look on the back of your DVD drive... where is the jumper (left, middle or right)?

LOL nvm, an Atari is old school stuff and he just playing with you. You can play Pong and maybe arkanoid on it :p oh and the buggers made UT somehow :/

I am not too clued up with these things anymore since I became PC Support but can't actually fix our PC's since I need to be Dell certified but lets try...

ATAPI...this is probably your CD/DVD-Rom drive right? And it uses a funny thin long grey (Well not always grey) cable from CD-Rom to your motherboard.

Firstly...was there any change that you know of that could have caused the problem? A recent device attached perhaps?

If not I would say that perhaps your CD/DVD-Rom has become faulty but before we jump to conclusions let us try one thing. You are going to have to open up your PC case on both sides and unscrew every screw attaching your CD-Rom to the inside of the case (unless you have a fancy case with clips or some newfangled contraption :p). Slide the device out of the case so that you can get a better look at it...unplug any cables if you have to but memorize where they were.

At the back of the CD-Rom there is what is called a jumper connecting two pins. You may note a brief diagram inscribed on the Cd-Rom as to the position of the jumper and what it is currently set to. Being careful not to drop the tiny miniscule jumper or bend any pins pull the jumper out. Then studying the diagram on the device put the jumper back in the position marked as "Cable Select". Piece everything back together and try reboot. If no luck then try the other option "Slave".

If still no luck then try unplugging the CD-Rom completely and see if it boots with no error. If no error appears then try testing the device on another PC if you can and that should help you determine if it is faulty. You could also try other IDE cables and test your M-Board with another CD-Rom.

*Please note I hope I am not leading you astray here and that my advice is sound...I am rusty with these things nowadays :p

its on the right
 
I've had that error with a badly written bootable CD left in the drive, obviously the system has to be set to attempt to boot from CD first. When the system does a POST (the 1st screen when it shows how much memory and DEL to enter setup etc) it attempts to see if theres a CD in the drive - a bad disc can cause and IO error there....

which means your DVD drive is set as MASTER (as it should be if it is by itself on the cable)... and it should be plugged in to the very end of the grey ribbon cable. If that is true... then you should not be getting a SLAVE drive error... since you don't have any slave drives. try unplugging and re-plugging.

I have unplugged and replugged but no change

OK, then try...

1) move the jumper on the back of the DVD drive to the middle (slave) or to the left (Cable Select)... and then plug it into the middle of the grey ribbon cable (keeping the red stripe on the one side of the ribbon cable to the right)

or...

2) Try a different ribbon cable, if you don't have one... get one from the computer shop tomorrow morning.

remember now, always blow on the ATARI Cartridge from the bottom, each time you play another game...
