Hi all,

I have gone through this forum, but no-one of recent seems to be having my problem...

Have a basic PC at home and use Telkom dailup for mail download. Earlier this year could not establish a connection using Discovery ISP and Telkom line. Got some help from IT at work, but after changing modem, problem was fixed. Modem may have gone south by means of all the load shedding.

But a week or two later, discovered phone line was dead. Checked all home phones, line at PC, but nothing out of the ordinary. Logged problem with Telkom and they came to check their side and deemed all fine.
Did check up to our PC and this is the thing - when you unplug telephone to modem connection, our home telephone works. Plug it back and lines go dead. Tech says either PC or modem could be at fault.

Any ideas of why this could happen, or confirm tech investigation and corrective action required.

Regards,
Ary

Yip....techs fault finding sounds fine.

Your modem, pc or somthing connected to the "phone" port of the modem seems to be looping the line.

Switch the PC off, unplug it from the power source (breaking the earth link). If the line is still looped, unplug anything connected to the "phone" port of the modem. If your line is dead now---->your modem needs replacing. If not, plug in PC and reboot (a reset can do wonders). If you have dailtone on your line now, plug in the line that was in the "phone" port of the modem. If the line goes dead now--->its not the modem or the pc's problem but rather the equipment connected to the "phone" port.

Good luck....get ADSL....Dial-up is soooo yesterday!:D

PC Problem or Telkom Dailup

Hi friend,

I think so it’s your pc’s problem so I suggest u First you check your all power source and circuits, that they work properly and then if its not proper then please rearrange them and switch the PC off. And after this process you don’t got the result then please u call your modem operator.

Hi all,

yes, it was the modem (again).

And the guys at Comx (www.comx.co.za) helped with a new one at a decent price - yes, you still get modems with a phone jack.

But I told my wife - if anything else goes wrong on modem side this year, I'm going for something else to establish connectivity. And cancel Telkom at the same time.

Thanks
