Hi, my friends Pc is giving him grief :p

His specs
P4 3.4
Gainward 7800gtx 256mb
1gig ram
320gig IDE HDD
Asus mboard (dont remember which one)

Problem
It runs ****e slow! loading games/windows anything takes forever, CS source lags on medium graphics with HDR off. Latest drivers are installed. Only thing I can think of is HDD problem cause when we are connected gigabit to each other, it doesnt copy faster than 2000KB/s...

Any words for the wise people of myadsl :D

Thanx in advance

Run a Registry claner as well and a defrag, spyware/malware check etc.

Sounds like a clean install.

Another thing to try is updating the BIOS. I had a similiar issue with a new PC, and was ready to toss it out the window. The last thing I tried was updating the BIOS, and all speed problems were solved.

Also remove rubbish applications you dont really need that load on windows start up (or just prevent them from starting). A PSU with a low power output can also effect the running of the system. But first look at software before looking at hardware.

Another good point supersunbird, the fan and heatsink could also need to be cleaned. Push come to shove, maybe even a change of heatsink and fan.

i say clean install and work from there, if its the same problem start looking at your hardware

If it isn't broken, don't fix it, because from my experience, if you are asking that question, you've got an itch ;) :D :p

lol teraside, but seriously I do have an itch and my pc also running bl00dy slow and giving a wierd message when switching off (can't tell you now what it is coz I'm not at home.

Have to break it one more time:eek: before selling it at the end of the month:(

@supersunbird - you did not see that comment

@S1ght - sorry for jumping in on your thread. I promise to behave now:)

No prob Xen :) Thanx for all the replies. I would tell my friend to do all this but I don't think he'd do to well :p so I have to wait till the next time I'm there to take a look at it :) Is there maybe a utility that can test all the hardware like harddrive, ram, mboard, etc to see whether it is hardware related??

seen a good few PCs come in for repairs after someone messed up a BIOS flash - its sad to see grown people cry - but if you get wrong your mother is toast, if you manage to find another one that will take your RAM and CPU... Windows will hiss and spit Hardware change - but everything should be fine after that

2k a sec copy speed
hmmm

sounds as if your IDE isn't working on udma mode 5+ - rather PIO mode

go check it out under device manager - ide controllers - check current transfer mode.

there is a registry edit that u can do that resets/reforces a detection of the drive's potential speed...helps when its stuck in PIO mode

things i would check

-cpu temp , other temps
-fans clean
-mem test
-psu swop
-ide/sata cable swops
-run without optical drives
-use ccleaner to clean temp files
-verify udma/pio transfer speeds
-download latest video driver
-download latest chipset driver
-don't overclock + run bios at fail safe settings
-run ATX powerconnector without additional 4pin pluggie (turns 20pin connector into 24pin) -on the newer psu's
-disable network card
-disable soundcard in bios
-check for spyware (spybot s&d)
-check for virus (avast home free)
-update windows

all of this is for finding the problem

He has one of those EIDE slots? I read its meant to be like IDE2 or something? Should there be any problems if I plugged a normal HDD into there?
