A client has approached me to provide them with hardware and an operating system required for the efficient running of their Advertising business on limited budget.

The following are their requirements.

a) The accounting department requires it to prepare documents and spreadsheets (im thinking excel would suffice??). The two accountants would like to be able to access their files from home and be able to share their files with each other. (i have minimal knowledge on networkin...just enough to get by...recommendations for a web/file server?)

b) The graphic design unit (3 employees) requires hardware that would enable them to perform their functions as a team, including desktop publishing. (im thinking photoshop? what else do graphic designers use?)

c) The five journalists and three photographers require access to their devices in the field and at work.

d) They all require file and printer sharing capabilities.

Requirements:
i am required to draw up a proposal to present to the Client that include (but is not limited to) the following details:

1. The type of PC setup I have chosen to use. (justify choice)
2. All hardware and software needed for setting up the PC.
3. A budget outlining the costs for the setup.

NB: The Business has a limited budget so all of this has to be done with minimal cost.

I am an Architect by profession but i have knowledge of PCs, hardware and some software...any suggestions regarding this would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!

Are you sure you want to get directly involved because it sounds as though you are out of your depth ATM.

Rather provide your location and see if someone can help with the HW, SW & support requirements plus I recommend using an established networking company.

You can put together the final package for presentation to the client and charge a consultancy fee.

It sounds like they need an ERP package.
Complicated to set up. There are open source ones available. Sub contract that.
Accountants might have a gripe with learning new software though.
Pastel has a cloud package available. And the journalist can set up Google docs and share files with each other on the run.

I think you should get a network guy involved to help with office setup.
Except if they do graphics design they really need an basic spec pc. Save yourself headaches and get ones with onsite support.

Another option is for them to save all their files, excel and pastel to dropbox.
I'm not sure if you can use Pastel Irontree service to restore current version on each others home computers.

They should just keep their heads with version control.

It just occurred to me that you can also use something like this. Network drives with internet sharing.

http://www.buffalotech.com/products/network-storage/home-and-small-office/linkstation-duo-ls-wxlr1/

"Home Server for any Streaming Need!

Fast and easy to install, LinkStation Duo allows you to store and share your music, photos and videos with multiple computers and users on your network and even over the Internet. Since the LinkStation Duo is connected to your network, you can stream media to any connected device, anywhere in your house!"

Or a Mybook Live

http://wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=620

"Create your own personal cloud.
Access your files at home or away with your Mac, PC, smartphone and iPad. Stream videos, music, and photos to your connected TV, game console or media player."

Many more such products
