I currently have a set of faulty Logitech Z623 speakers that I need to replace.

I'd like to get something with better sound quality, perhaps some sort of studio monitors. Any recommendations?

Thanks @ponder for linking my thread. I ended up buying the PreSonus Eris E4.5.

@KhoisanX, what's you're budget?

What's your expectations of a studio monitor? Reason for the question, is that studio monitors are for flat response, so the uninitiated complain about the lack of bass. You're coming from a 2.1 system, so you'll probably feel the bass is lacking.

I have a set a set of Sennheiser HD558s, sound quality similar to that would be good. Overall sound quality is definitely more important than bass, but I'm open to looking at options other than studio monitors.

I don't have a specific budget, but I need new speakers and I'd like to get something decent, but also good value for money.

Kinda ridiculous if you ask me. I had the same logitech speakers and all you could hear was muffled spongey bass. Moving to studio monitors was a revelation. The bass is tight and controlled, so you actually hear it better.

You'll definitely need a budget. Monitors can cost an arm and a leg. Like over 20K for a single speaker.

If you're looking for a good set of "monitors" and don't need a flat response, the Samson MediaOne BT4's get some good reviews. It has good detail, but the bass is a bit hyped. That's why I put monitors in quotes.

If you don't want to over budget just go for the krk rokit 8's. They're active so no external amp required and have balanced, xlr and RCA inputs.

It depends on the monitors you get and your perception of bass. If you have 8" monitors that go down to 35Hz, then the bass should be well represented. But the bass still won't be boosted the way many people like.

My Eris 4.5's only go down to 70Hz, so I am missing 20Hz-70Hz. I do like bass, so I feel there's something missing, but I like accuracy even more, so I am very happy with my speakers.

That heavily depends on the size of the budget. If you only have R5k to spend, you can only pick up a single Rokit 8 monitor.

You can get a pair of JBL LSR305's for R6k. It's a damn good monitor. It goes down to 43Hz.

The Eris E8's (pair) can be had for R8K and go down to 35Hz. PreSonus is a rather underrated brand. (I might also be a bit biased)

I didn't have the budget for any of the above, so I settled on the Eris E4.5 that I got for R2650.

Thanks for all the input, I've narrowed it down to the following 3 options:
  • JBL LSR305
  • PreSonus E5
  • KRK Rokit 5
They all seem to get decent reviews, but which would be the best option?

From the reviews you'll probably still be confused (as you are), but in the end you'll realise that they're all great speakers. There are professionals using each of them. If anyone is better than the other is more subjective and it will only have a slight edge.

From the reviews, I think the JBLs have the edge.

You can check out https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm-MKyxKdanxpOBTx8wiY1w for comparisons. Just keep in mind the speakers on which you're listening to these videos.

Here's a comparison video with all 3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpW1u234FMc. There are more comparisons on the channel involving the monitors from your shortlist.

Also read the comments/description by Digital Stereophony on each of the comparison videos. He gives a run down on the how they compare.

Lastly, go to music (instrument) shops. They might have some of these monitors around for you to have a listen. If you do, please support them.
