Hi

I am new to the forum so I do not know if you guys discussed this topic before. I saw a thread on gaming PC's but I am only interested in the specs for a development PC.

I would like to buy a PC for my personal use in developing Stand alone and Web Apps. I will probably use eclipse and I would also need to run JBoss server. Now I know that I will need a lot of memory. What do you guys recommend in terms of processors, etc. Also is it worth getting an LCD screen.

I am from CT, do you know of any reliable suppliers here.

Thanks

Howdy
Well, I run Websphere (based on Eclispe but more resource intensive) on a P4 3GHz with 1GB of RAM, works fine but would recommend more RAM.

Also run it on a laptop 2 GHz Turion with a Gig too, also runs fine.

The seperate server idea is a very good one, Eclipse should allow you to deploy to a different machine, tho I'm not too familiar with JBoss.

Thanks Jeremi

I do have an older machine, P4, I think itss a 1.6MHz processor. This machine does have 1Gb of ram. I am running ubuntu n this machine. Are you suggesting that I use this machine to run the JBoss server. It sounds like a good idea.

im sure a conroe 6300E should be fine with 2 gig memory :)

although 2 gig memory is like 2k now way way over priced :(

i think running a raid setup would also provide some more speed

LCD FTW

do not buy a crt unless you need the clarity of a crt :)

Hey Sharkey

We're a Java shop and we develop for JBoss, WebSphere, Oracle App Server, etc..
I'll check with our network oke who buys all our development PCs and PM u with resellers in CTN as I'm not sure if I can list them here.

For the record we buy laptops with a min of 1GB ram and that's fine for us. We spend about 12 - 14k per laptop but we decided to go that route to allow our developers the choice of working from home as well.

Let me see what I can come up with but remember you have to have an account with these big resellers hey. Just a hint...if you follow Cricket at all.....Newlands have been renamed after one of these companies, LOL

Thanks Fiekus

I will wait for your quote.

Why would I need RAID, I want to buy a pc for home use. Because I will be doing some part time development at home, I would like a decent PC. I think that RAID is overkill for a home user.

I was looking for advice on which harddrives(PATA, or SATA), RAM(DDR or DDR2), Motherboards(Intel or AMD), Processors(Intel or AMD) to buy. I am not looking for the most expensive system, I am looking to build a cost effective system to suit my needs.

Is it worth buying the LCD display or the LCD TV Display or is a crt monitor ok
