Tried now yes. Did memtest from the Linux Mint boot disc, ran fine. Completed successfully.
Then when Mint tried loading, it shut down again at the same point.

It still shut down when trying to load mint though. As if i recall correctly, Mint actually opens a desktop environment before installing. It didn't this time. Might just be time to trash this box... Or post to classifieds as "Project box"...

Memtest86, then a lived.

Tried this, it completed without errors.

This thing got onboard gfx or are you using a dedicated gpu?

If onboard try disabling it in bios and using dedicated gpu & vice versa.

I'm at a loss, I could keep posting things to try but remote diagnostics probably has a sad success rate

Thanks for all your assistance gents. Sadly, due to festive days, I have not had time to tinker as much as I would like, but i'll get around to it this weekend again.
