Hi

Tuesday night we've had a massive lightning storm. So the following day I checked my PC to check if it is still working, but the lan port on the motherboard was dead, the rest worked fine. But a few hours later the pc freezed. Aftter that it worked fine for the day. But now today my pc is not working for longer than 20 seconds and then it dies. (not even enough time to boot).

I have a UPS, but nothing to protect my router from lightning.

I will test each component individually later, but will I be able to claim from insurance if only the motherboard is dead? Any suggestions?

Yup phone the insurance and don't ask ummm do you guys think it was the lightning? Phone them say the pc was hit you need to replace it.

End of story. Follow instructions.

I had exactly the same problem a while ago. PC would boot fine but then die within a minute or so .. almost as if it's going into sleep mode, lights go out and it just fades away.
Physically unplug the network cable & see if it stays on then. Mine did, so I disabled the onboard nic in the bios & bought a PCI replacement for R42 - problem fixed.

Same scenario with mine a couple of years back.

How does that work? Do you send your old PC to the insurance company? Or do they come and inspect it?

Same thing happened to me a few years ago. You go to a reputable computer store (I think I used IC) and they will give an official diagnosis and confirm the damage could be due to lightening or a power surge of some sort. They will also give a quote on repairing / replacing it. The insurance will pay you cash to replace it. That's what happened to me anyway with outsurance...

Well, I've tried a new network card, remove the ethernet cable, but the freezing still continues. Probably going to call the insurance tomorrow.

What can I expect in replacement? The same pc?

I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L, E8200, IceQ4 HD 4850, 4gb OCZ Platinum memory, Raidmax Case and a Gigabyte Odin PSU.

Your network port may be fried, but I'm willing to bet that PSU is the problem here.

Might be because Gigabyte Odin is cheap POS or it might be because lightning finally pushed the cheap POS over the edge but hey, it happens.

Maybe test with another PSU ;)

Lol, it may be a POS, but it worked fine up till now. Will check out something else tonight...

Hehe, just messing with you man (calling it a POS). Seriously tho, it isn't the best quality but better than some of the other products out there.

Yeah I know;). And btw it isn't the PSU!

Also The P35 DS3 boards have susceptible NIC's. On my previous PC the NIC on my DS3R died three times and the machine wouldn't post at all, though I think that may just have been a bad batch of boards that Rectron had in at the time.

I think it was possibly because at one point rectron were repairing motherboards, so when you swapped out your mobo you got one they had fixed. I could be wrong i can clearly recall exchanging motherboards and getting ones that looked like they had been used.

before going to the insurance be sure to check how far your loyalty reward is from now, because i don't believe you will get an entire new pc and waisting your reward would be stupid rather by an pci replac
ement and wait for ur reward and then invest.
