PC switches off by itself

PC's been running fine for about a year. Since 2 nights ago when I boot it goes through the motions, then about a minute into the process it just dies. I'm usually in the OS already, no messages pop up, the front power indicator light switches off & monitor goes into sleep mode 'cos of no signal. It's exactly as if the PC itself goes into sleep mode. I've disconnected everything except the GPU & booted from OS on CD but the same thing happens which makes me believe it is hardware i.e. not OS related.

I recon its power supply but I had overheating issues on the GPU a while ago so not 100% sure. I don't have a spare PSU or GPU to swop out for testing .. so any ideas on how do i determine what the problem is?

Advice much appreciated.

It probably is the GPU or PSU related as you've indicated.

To rule out the GPU overheating, if you have a 80mm or 120mm fan, mount it onto the heatsink and see if that helps (especially if you have a passive cooler - I NEVER recommend those).

What's the specs of the machine and what PSU are you using? Does the PSU have more than one +12V rail? If yes, are you balancing the load over all the rails?

I would say the GPU, same ting happened with me. It would overheat and monitor would go into sleep and you cant do anything.

Check to see if your CPU cooler is not covered in dust. Most motherboards have an automatic switchoff to protect your CPU if it overheats due to improper cooling. Had this problem before.

Had the same problem a few years back, the problem was the CPU overheating, so when the temp. of the CPU eventually reached +90C, the system switched off. It usually got the the log in screen. The solution in the end was to get a new CPU and better cooling solution.

evilstebunny, kan jy jou PC se specs post ook? Belangrikstes is CPU, graphics card, PSU, aantal hard drives en of jy enigsins overclock.

I'm logging GPU temps with GPU-Z and it never goes above 44 during the shutdowns, its idling.

System specs: E7400 on a Asus P5QPL-VM motherboard. Gigabyte Odin 585 power supply. HD 4850 1gig graphics.

Dunno about load balancing, how do I do that?

Load balancing is if you connect your peripherals in such a way that it is spreading the load across multiple +12V rails, but I don't think that this is possible with the Odin 585 PSU, since all the molex connectors are on the 2nd +12V rail.
AFAIK load balancing is only possible with power supplies that has 3 or more +12V rails, because the ones with 2x +12V rails places the CPU on the first and the graphics card + peripherals on the second, giving you no option to do load balancing with your peripherals.

You are well below your PSU's rated specifications of 16A & 18A on the 2x +12V rails, seeing as your CPU is rated 65W TDP and your graphics card 110W TDP.

You can download HWMonitor to monitor both your GPU, CPU, HDD & motherboard temperatures, as well as fan speeds.

My friend had exactly the same prob, and it turned out 2 be his psu. I i'd say try another psu.
