Setup the new machine in parallel with the old one and when done transfer the data. You could always keep the old machine running as a live backup system.

dam - I'm was just going to replacing the MB & chip, ram - not the whole case. using the existing power supply & graphics etc. we are going to setup a seprate pc as a sever but the funds aren't there right now.
anyway thanks for all yr advice.
