PC what do you advise

Could you please tell us more about what "monitoring" would entail?

Would it have to record to the hard drive, it would it simply playback the video straight onto the screen?

What camera(s) do you have and what quality (resolution, bitrate & FPS) do you want to "monitor"?

Like at this moment my friend is using a stock HP Microserver N36L (just upgraded RAM to 2x 2GB DDR3 1333MHz) to monitor 2x or 3x low resolution IP cameras, using ZoneMinder. I don't think he is using any filtering/processing on the videos, except for the general motion detection which should result in the recordings being captured/stored as JPEG files onto the hard drive.

Basically just a workstation, nothing can be stored locally but maybe I will just need to store docs etc.
It will be connected to a lan where we will monitor the video CCTV feed. HD so it must have HDMI and this will then go into a 32" Sammy LED Full HD

Any bottom of the range PC you would use for simple office work should suffice.

An alternative to that would be to get an HP Microserver with like an NVidia GT240, but it would only be like R500 cheaper when you're going to buy a 1TB HDD too!

I just don't get the reason why you'd want to have a camera monitoring PC as a workstation too...

Sorry did not explain properly - the workstations will be used to log into the DVR to control the cameras. We are not looking at the standalone controllers but rather PC's running the software to control the cameras through the DVR

What make/model is the software to be run on the PC?

How many channels?

A lowly dual core celeron should be fine for even 16 channels for remote monitoring. A system with 32 or 64 channel remote monitoring would require more grunt, perhaps an i3 with 2GB RAM. This is assuming that its going to be for SD video feeds and not HD-SDI or IP.

EDIT:Just checked the 16CH pc based system in the office and that pegs my 2.2GHZ core 2 duo at 90% usage:confused:

Will check later or Monday what a 16CH embedded does.

16CH embedded sits at 25-35% CPU usage with a recording resolution of half D1 and 55-70% usage at full D1 resolution with 300MB of RAM.

So perhaps an I3 as a minimum?
