Set up my new PC using PS2 mouse and keyboard. Later when I plugged in my trusty USB wireless mouse / kb receiver, it just wouldn't boot. Got as far as the "press F2 for bios setup" and that was it. Cannot even access the bios at this point - have to do a hardware reset. Tried every combination of everything to do with USB in the bios but still no joy. Oddly enough, if you plug the USB receiver in after the PC has booted, it all works fine. I have the original driver cd and here too, makes no difference if the drivers are installed or not. Switch it off and it won't boot. Eventually went and bought a new wireless mouse / kb (different make) and it works fine!

The mobo doesn't have the drivers for the wireless keyboard/mouse USB controller and therefore thinks that no keyboard is attached.

Update mobo firmware.

Toggle the plug & play option.

NB this could have undesirable side-effects & you might have to re-install. You should be able to just toggle it back to reverse effects though.

You're probably right. Don't think updating the mobo firmware will help though. It's a brand new MB and a very old mouse / kb. If they don't have the drivers by now, they never will.

Come to think of it, I also tried booting with the PS2 mouse and kb attached along with the wireless USB. PC wouldn't respond to either m/kb input. And it refused to boot. I have run parallel arrangements like that before and there was no conflict. I would have thought in a situation like that (no drivers for USB device) that the PS2 device would take precedence and allow boot up.

Thanks. Don't recall seeing this option but will have a look.

Check the boot devices order and drop the USB devices below the CD and harddrive and see what happens.

Did that. Same result. Went so far as to remove USB devices from the boot order - set to disabled, so just HDD and CD Rom. Oh and remember, the new one I bought is USB and it works fine!

Does this happen when you plug the dongles into the other usb ports as well?

Yes, I tried at least 2 at the back and one in the front, not every single one mind you......

The dongle for the new m/kb setup went into one of the ports that didn't work with the old setup. I know that because I save the most awkwardly situated ports for 'permanent residents', in this case just below the monitor outlet.
