Hi,
While browsing the forums, I came across a company called PC ZONE http://www.zones.co.za

I took a look at some of their prices, and they seem to be CHEAPER than buying from the suppliers directly.
How is this possible?
Is it a snatch and grab scheme?
Do they import their own stock?
Do they maybe get special discounts, and if so, why?

Maybe someone has had experience buying from them and can comment

they buy huge quantities of stock from the suppliers and i have heard that they push out somewhere in the region of 30 boxes a day. but they use cheap quality components and there service levels are pretty shoddy

and im fairly certain they are only based in the durban region only as well and i generally try and avoid them...

edit: and yes i have bought from them before

+1 for what hoegh said. I only buy components from them, will never buy a complete pc from them, they use the cheapest of the cheap stuff in prebuilt machines and their service is horrific

When I was in Durban, I bought ALL of my PC peripherals from them, I bought a Core 2 DUO PC, 512mb XFX 8600GT g card, Wireless keyboard/mouse, Gamepads, Printers, blank discs, LCD Screens, etc...

...I had no hassles with them. All my stuff back in S.A. still work fine and in use. No catch, no gimic, just the hassle if you in Johannesburg or wherever, there is no option to buy online.

Their components are pretty cheap, but their customer service sucks. Their pre-built systems come with the cheapest components. I bought a pre-built system from them last year, came with an ECS micro motherboard (which I cannot get windows 7 drivers for now). The next option was add in R2000 more and get an Asus board. The PC was pretty cheap so I guess you get what you pay for at the end of the day.

So if you buying components from them you should be fine.

ja, on the component side you can get away with it because you know the brand and what to expect in terms of quality, but when something does go wrong you don't want to have to deal with them to sort it out, rather pay a little extra (prophecy is a good example) and have piece of mind that should something go wrong you will be able to sort it our relatively quickly...

Define cheap quality? The motherboards are Gigabyte (or Intel), hard drives are Seagate, cases are Gigabyte, RAM (can't remember but it's a known brand).

About 4yrs ago they did use crap components & I do agree that their service sucks up to today. I actually wanted to punch the one store owner a while back as he basically called me a liar (the guy is a real ahole).

I got a Q6600 machine from them and I'm very happy with it. You are not going to get a gamers top-end gigabyte MB with it but the G31 series does the job for me.

I still reckon it's good value for money and they sell well known branded products like Asus etc

+1 Yeah buying from them is all good and well the assistants are actually friendly... but if something goes wrong and you want to return then thats were the problem starts, you feel like you are in a different store.

I only buy stuff at their yearly birthday sale, Other than that I try not to. I honestly dont want to experience taking something back to them if it is faulty,

Take a look at the link and you'll see what I mean when you read some of the comments,

Never had Problems with PC Zone, my brother bought a motherboard from them which had terrible performance. When he plugged his 8800gts into it there was so much stuttering in game. We did fight with them for a while about it but eventually they replaced it.

The always replace components that don't work or malfunction so they are pretty decent, but the actual people working thier treat you like **** once you have bought the component and bring it back if you have a problem.

IMO i have not experienced any problems with pczone i have been supporting them for the last 3yrs and they neva gave me a single problem. My last trip was to purchase my Q9550 and the guy that helped me was very friendly ,everytime i asked his opinion on a product he not only gave me his opinion but asked his fellow team members on theirs which made putting my system together painless. And the do not use the cheapest of cheap parts ,all pre builts use entry level parts.Seagate hdds ,intel boards ,transcend memory ,samsung dvd lightscribe writers and Aopen mouse n keyboard.PC Zone is a good place to shop for all your computer needs.

judging from what i have read now, it seems that they have jacked themselves up on the component side which is good but as I have said their customer service is not 100% and they often don't have stock AND they charge you extra if you use a credit card which is a hellava pain cause im not to keen on walking around with a couple of grand in my pockets. anyhoo, use them at your own risk and if you are a bit of a noob to the whole hardware thing then avoid them cause you might get burnt, my 2c worth

Its either you have bad luck with them or you dont, when I started buying there I had no problems with them at all, all my components worked 100%. The last purchase I made was a DVD-Rom (Samsung) which worked for about a month. Yip, they are the cheapest but if you want to take the risk and it works fine then you've saved some buck. If something goes wrong then you have a nightmare swapping your components.

Samsung's also a crap brand with regard to optical devices

+1 i purchased the 22x samsung dvd writer from them last year, returned it twice already. One thing thats good about them is that although you will have to make a moan when returning stuff to them, when they eventually do take it back they swap it for a new one, so you dont have to wait for the item to be repaired

I honestly have never ever had a problem with any of my 5 samsung drives they all worked perfectly and they stil work 100% up till today ,i don't see why people complain about them all the time, or could it be that mayb faultycomponentngitis doesn't effect me.LoL

Lol yeah cupholder, actually i use my drive every day to copy mp3 dvds for friends and family and i also play alota games.
