PCI-e Gigabit LAN CARD?

One of our users needs a 10/100/1000 LAN card for his pc.
He just got a new Dell Vostro 200 desktop, but the friggin thing doesn't have gigabit onboard LAN, ONLY 100Mbps.
So only option is to get a PCI card... but, the mobo (Foxconn G33-M02) has only got 2 PCI slots. One is used for a special card they use to connect some UV camera (to take snapshots of gene/DNA) and the other PCI slot I used for a serial port (no onboard serial port on new mobos).
So I figured, perhaps there are headers on the mobo to connect just a serial port, then I can use the PCI port for gigabit LAN card.
But, alas... no serial/com port headers on mobo.
So the only open slots left is the PCI-e slots... are there Gigabit LAN cards for PCI-e slot available locally?
On google I found a few, but sheesh, they cost almost as much as the pc? I dont need such a fancy LAN card....
Any ideas... suppliers?
I guess I can use a USB->Serial adapter, to free up a PCI slot for LAN card... but since the serial connection, for a logger is used all the time, I prefer PCI flavour.

Yeah we where talking about kind of the same things when neotell launched without Ethernet connection and people wanted to know if you use to Ethernet with a use, and in that we saw and talked about that 2 from Ethernet to usb and back.
 
I was thinking of LAN over USB, but I didnt think even USB2 could go that fast.
I guess nowadays u can get anything to go via USB.

Anyways... is USB for a full time connection (serial/LAN/paralell) as good (stable?) as PCI?
If so, then USB->Serial should also be OK
