Update:

I went out and bought the Mecer PCT1010R card inserted it into my pc and it loaded without any problems. I am getting speeds between 42 and 79KB/s.

Question:
Does the red shell next to the network info change color according to signal? I ask coz it's never changed and cant find where the bars are that indicate the 3G signal strength. The only bars I see are the ones similar to what shows on my phone if I'm in good range to make calls, which is always at 5 bars.

I have tried to get my Option Globe Trotter 3G+ Data Card working in one of my desktops at home and had only endless problems so far. I bought a Mecer PCT1010R PCMCIA adapter (Ricoh chipset) and could not get this working at all in the one desktop. It would not configure the card (not enough resources) in the one PC (Gigabyte Mboard AMD Athlon CPU WIN XP Pro SP2). I shuffled PCI and video cards around to no avail and only ended up blowing an old monitor in the process.

On the other PC (Gigabyte Mboard AMD Athlon X64 CPU WIN XP Pro SP2) I got the cards working first time (I thought). The lights on the Option card were flashing and everything seemed set to go. No hardware or driver problems it seemed, until I tried to get the s/ware to connect. It came up with a message saying I must manually dial or wait for the operator to connect to the number before proceeding.

This pointed at first to some networking problem (all the PC's are on a home LAN with a d/u modem on one of the PC's). I tried to get the connection up manually and it also came up with the same message. Then I tried using the modem command window. It accepted the ATDT*99***1# and came up with "CONNECTING 180000", but that is as far as I ever got. I thought it might be signal strength problems, but I have 2-3 bars, which is as much as I normally have on my laptop.

If anybody can throw some light on this problem, I would greatly appreciate the assistance.

You may ask why I want to do all of this ... Well, I would like to keep the laptop that I use for work, separate from my home network, but would like the advantages of the higher 3g speeds for my home network for those silly Windows Update downloads etc.!!

The bars you see that are similar to your phone are the signal quality.

The Shell is Huawei Logo. If you have unbranded software you will get the shell display. I am with MTN so I get Mtn logo there but when I use VC or VM I get the shell. There is a patch that one of the guys has made to get all the logos. I can not remember where that post is.
