THE Port Elizabeth Flying Squad has all but collapsed, with just one operational vehicle left for the entire Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas.

This follows months of pleading by squad members for police bosses to increase their vehicle fleet – but the appeals have fallen on deaf ears.

The vehicle – a sponsored high-performance Chevrolet Lumina – has been the only operational vehicle servicing the Bay and other nearby towns, including Jeffreys Bay and the Addo area, for the past two weeks. There are 16 vehicles – between the Flying Squad and K9 Unit – awaiting repairs and booked into the state garage. - Gareth Wilson

They should take some of those bling yellow cars that the ANC was parading around the townships last week for vote garnishing and send them down to the SAP in PE/----

you'll get a flying squad, dog unit and ambulances deployed to the area in no time.
 
The referenced article lies ... they have a lot more than on working vehicle. I'ts just that the other 15 are being used by officials as taxis, to make themselves more pocket money

Maybe normal patrolling and admin types, but not the Flying Squad guys in PE.
 
It is terrible news if true. Through all the years they were actually spoilt with vehicles. They were usually much better off compared to other stations and Units.

They also received sponsored vehicles.
16 vehicles between the Dog unit and Flying squad isn't to bad, if they have the man power to fill them per shift.

It is a lot to have on the repair list though. I have heard stories that SAPS Garage are slow in turning out vehicles that are booked in for repairs, but there lot of factors involved I suppose.
 
Do the police have a driver test system like the likes of Eskom and Rand Water have? At Eskom or Rand Water if you make use of their vehicles they put you through their own more test which is more stringent than a regular driver's test. I hope they at least put the flying squad drivers through advanced driver training.
