The Nelson Mandela Bay municipal manager, Lindiwe Msengana-Ndlela, has resigned with immediate effect, Eastern Cape local government MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane said on Wednesday.

"I regret this unfortunate loss of a solid, consummate professional in the local government sector," Qoboshiyane said in a statement.

"Those remaining in the employ of the municipality must work harder with their councillors to meet the needs of the local community."

No reasons were given for Msengana-Ndlela's resignation.

The municipality would appoint an acting municipal manager in Msengana-Ndlela's place until a suitable candidate had been found to fill her position.

In May, Msengana-Ndlela reportedly said she had hit a brick wall in her efforts to tackle poor financial management and increase accountability.

She had blamed political interference and intimidation.

Msengana-Ndlela had reportedly complained that interference by the executive mayor Nkosinathi Benson Fihla and deputy mayor Thando Ngcolomba was making her job unbearable and putting her security at risk.

Sad that a competent manager resigns due to political interference.... followed by death threats if she did not toe the line and sign contracts, etc. as dictated by the political appointees.

The issue is that at every turn, those trying to combat corruption are continually superseded by the corrupt...

And ultimately their big boss, JZ, seemingly condones corruption
