Water Supply Running Low

18 February 2015 By NMB Communications Leave a Comment

Loadshedding over the last month and the extended electricity outage last night and the night before has resulted in our supply reservoirs running low.

We humbly request all our citizens to please use water sparingly. The water pressure in many parts of Nelson Mandela Bay is already low.

We will provide more detailed information later in the week.

We thank all residents for your cooperation in this regard.

 ... what extended electricity outages?

An excerpt from todays Herald says
The funding debacle came to light when the municipality’s head of infrastructure and engineering, Walter Shaidi, told councillors yesterday that water restrictions were imminent as the city’s dam levels were falling rapidly.
The latest figures on Monday show an overall level of 70.15% in all dams – down more than seven percentage points since November.
Shaidi said the municipality had no other choice but to implement water restrictions in a bid to get residents to save water.
“I will come back with a full report on water cuts, but we will have to go for water restrictions now because we are heading for a big problem,” he told the municipal public accounts committee (MPAC).

I seem to recollect water restrictions being mooted in Council late last year because of unmetered water losses attributed to poor maintenance of the mains system. It was shot down by all parties and the Water Dept was told to get their act together - seems this never happened

Of course it never happened, that would require people to actually do some work.

Scary thing is with electricity we can still make a plan.. Gas, candles or generators but with water we're truly screwed.

Residents of Nelson Mandela Bay could possibly expect more water supply interruptions in future, warned the NMB Municipality.

This is as a result of power cuts due to loadshedding. The Municipality said they cannot be 100% sure whether the water supply interruption this morning would not happen again. Many areas, predominantly in the Western Suburbs of Port Elizabeth, were left with little or no water on Wednesday, February 18.

“Remember some challenges are beyond our control. What we can commit to is that we will try to work around the clock for whatever that is possible within our power and capability to restore water distribution as soon as possible. If we can't, we will provide alternatives for people to have water.

"Remember water is a source of life, we cannot subject people to a situation where they go for days without water,” Municipal Spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki said this morning.

Residents in many of the communities around the Metro took to social media venting their frustration about the water situation.

Marius Jonker wrote in the Public Servant News Network Eastern Cape's Facebook page, "I spoke to a NMB Water Department official this morning. Broken pump at the Churchill Dam was repaired and filling 5 reservoirs that feed half of P.E. Water into these was only at 10% but water pressure should be restored by this afternoon."

Mniki however denied these claims saying, “Loadshedding over the last month and the extended electricity outage last night and the night before has resulted in our supply reservoirs running low. There is no crisis, it is just a temporary setback, the reservoir will pick up and the pressure will get back to normal during the course of the day,” he said.

Mniki asked residents to use water sparingly as the water pressure in many parts of Nelson Mandela Bay was already low

So PE will run out of water in 2 days if the power goes out?

I currently store 10l of drinking water for emergencies but i think I should up that a bit.
