Pedestrian crossings..

Dunno if this is just PE, but lately I get the idea that motorists have forgotten the purpose of these things.. they don't exist just to add some fancy stripes on the road.

Just a couple days ago I stopped at one for some pedestrians and the clown behind me seemed to think I had no business stopping so he just cruised right past me and luckily missed the people but it could have been quite messy. This one was on Heugh road which is (by my limited observations) one of the worst areas in PE where motorists seem to just blithely ignore crossings.

I've become quite cautious about how I stop at them as I've also nearly been rear ended a few times by drivers who seem surprised at the vehicle stopping in front of them for no reason.

Anyway, I don't have much else to say about it but just felt like ranting a bit.

Same thing in Heidelberg rd in City Deep. Taxy almost took out pedestrians while swerving and hosting at me.

But its pretty much most people. On patrol at night I can clearly see people simply driving over stop streets, not attempting to stop even.

I bet those same people stand around a Braai and complain about corruption and crime...

In Jo'burg the learners books seem to have been misprinted. Those fat white lines seem to indicate increase speed by 20-40km/hr

I was rear-ended at a stop street. I came to a halt since there was someone about to step off the pavement. The lady behind me was actually quite apologetic. She of course said she was in a hurry, so I took a picture of her car and the licence disc

The repairs came to R52k. I was astonished. A plastic bumper and a boot lid (Honda Civic)

In London people are much more disciplined. You can lose points if you do not yield on a pedestrian crossing, and if it is one with amber lights, can have your licence suspended for a time

I have found the exact same issue going up and down Mount Road. Near the bottom there are two pedestrian crossings and people never, ever stop for the schoolkids that frequently cross over there.

That entire road is a bit of a deathtrap despite the grey box speedtrap being there 5 out of the 7 days of the week

Agreed this is a problem too, (especially in East London ), but I view motorists more harshly personally as you don't need a license to walk therefore ignorance is a bit more acceptable among pedestrians (or should I say more to be expected).

In our High Street the whole road is treated as a pedestrian crossing, with cars having to dodge the people crossing where and when they wish. Saturday mornings are a nightmare with dozens of pedestrians in the road at any one time.

Probably in shock that you actually stopped.
Problem is as a pedestrian you can't assume the car is going to stop for you, so you kinda hover on the pavement giving the driver the side eye until you can see they're slowing down.
Then you give the obligatory wave of the hand in acknowledgement as you cross.

No pedestrians involved but my brother got rear-ended by a lady driver at a stop street as well. He dared to actually stop. It was low speed and his tow bar took all the damage so no problems.

Two months later the same thing happened. At the same stop street. With the same lady.
