Pedestrians and animals on highways

Has anyone else noticed an increase in the number of pedestrians and animals along and crossing the N2, especially around the airport and informal settlements?

Over the last few days I've seen people crossing with children, cows grazing at the edge of the road, and even a guy crossing with a wheelie bin:wtf: I've also seen some near misses and I know someone got run over last week. I know it's a very difficult problem to solve, but I haven't seen or heard of the authorities actively doing anything about this.

Any ideas?

Get e-toll roads :P They have had some success on the R21 where it was an issue near Tembisa.

These people will cross the highway right under a motor or pedestrian bridge. They will break down any old fashioned barriers like those walls at N1 between PTA an Warmbaths, concrete palisaded (N14 diepsloot) or metal palisades. What seem to work somewhat is the invisible wall (those metal fences with the many small holes) but even that would need to be inspected daily and repaired asap.

As to it being policed... SAPS has other things to focus on and Metro PDs are pretty useless and under resourced and poorly managed most of the time.

The problem is that they don't even care about their own lives, so there is no way to discourage them. I once saw a guy, after running across a the R21, making a gesture(pulling down his fist in front of him) that I could only interpret as "Yes, I made it"
 
Yeah its bad...

Deepsloot N14 regularly has accidents with a hectic body count. Every morning there are piles of people standing next to the road & you never know when one of them is going to take a chance and run. Plus that road has this weird mix of cars doing 80 and 140...with little in between...its either or.

This always confuses me. Dude has cattle which are a source of income/food for his/her family but they cba to keep an eye on their herd? If those cattle were my livelihood I'd not let them out of sight at all and risk them getting turned to mush by passing cars.
 
On the R300, I see they installed wire fencing on the wall close to Stell Arterial under the foot bridge. Hopefully this will help on the daily accidents there.
 
sad thing is when these imbeciles decide to run across the highway & get hit by a car - the driver is faced with all sorts of expenses & legal problems
