So this is kind of in relation to this thread. I think this is supposed to go into a new thread so here it is.

Does anyone know what would happen if I connected 2 xbox's to the internet via the same router and played a multi-player peer-to-peer based game eg. sacred 2;

Obviously they will first connect to the microsoft servers to climb onto live and stuff. But what I would really like to know is whether the game session itself will still send packets all the way to microsoft and back or whether the 2 xbox's will communicate directly with each other and spare me the lag and the bandwidth?

Please if anyone knows the answer to this, this is like the deciding factor on whether I'm going to buy another xbox or not.

Thanks

couldnt u connect the 2 xbox to the router and do a system link?

Yeah but I'm talking about the games that dont have system link feature. only online multi-player or co-op or whatever, in that case you'll have to connect both to xbox live but the question is what happens to the lag and the bandwidth?

A small example is this:

COD 5 supported co-op on pc but you had to have an account and signed in to the online server to authenticate you, then only can you create/join a game, but once the game was created all the network traffic passed directly between the 2 pc's and not all the way to COD servers and back again thus cancelling the lag and internet bandwidth.

This is what I wanna know about xbox live?

There is a way for you to do this via the routing table but its going to be complicated... the routes need to be set up so that the machines can still auth via xbox live but the traffic between them needs to routed localy.

...complicated.

I presumed there was a way. Just a pitty the xbox's cant figure that out themselves. Can you please point me in the right direction?

Have you done this before?

95 % of xbox games are peer to peer, somone hosts and everyone else connects!

Now the advantage of this is the xbox has built in upnp support and the xbox live service supports setting up a peer to peer connection.
IE, it says, both xbox's talk to xbox live server, both xbox's want to connect to each other so server tells them each others details, then one or the other can try connect to each other.

Now if you are both connected to the same router, what should happen is xbox1 says i'm running a game on this public ip blah blah to server, xbox2 is wanting to connect and gets that public ip and tries to connect, now because they are on the same router the router should just say well the destination is this address, which nats to that xbox and so the trafic should hopefully not leave your network, so it all depends on how the router handles it. but the trafic wont go ALL THE WAY TO THE MS SERVERS and back.

thats a really loose explanation but it should work in your favour

Thanks bboy for taking the time to explain how it works. I for one really hope that it does work exactly as you say. Only thing I'm wondering is that I connect through my 3g modem on my computer. You think it makes a difference?

The xbox's will both go into a 'not so fancy router' and from there the router goes into my pc and then throught the 3g to the internet.

So now you know why I am so paranoid about the bandwidth - because I'm paying vodacom a ton of money for it lol

i just tried the above scenario on my router, worked perfectly

Awesome! Thanx bboy, that really reassures me a lot. Im gonna go buy me a second xbox tomorrow :D

And you didnt use international bandwidth?

well look, if i were you i'd still give it a test. i'm using a wrt54gl running DD-WRT
i even used 170mb of data through the router, but according to my dsl usage stats on 300kb was used so it had to not be routing out the network

Sorry for only replying now. I can confirm that it will work and that it doesn't use bandwidth. The only bandwidth it uses is the bandwidth used to see which friends are on, Messenger, etc. In other words the Xboxes will communicate through the router. There is absolutely no lag in such a scenario whatsoever.

Using a Pirelli DRG 124a.

Good Luck.

Thanks bboy and godmode for testing it out. Really appreciate it :)

I'll try it with my current setup with the 3g card on the pc and will report back if it doesn't work, and if so then I guess I may as well go and buy a router anyway since I hate having to switch the computer on everytime lol.

Now I just need to get two xbox live accounts :D
