Hi All

I am interested in listening to your P2P idea's! I have been watching and reading this FORUM from time to time when i get a chance and see an increasing demand in P2P. Although 24-7 Online does allow P2P traffic through its network we do not give technical support on P2P as we have only tested one or two of the many programs out there also we have only allocated x amount of bandwidth for these applications! I might however be interested in hearing your comments on an idea. The idea is to form a P2P club and pay for hosting a server in the 24-7 server farm that could be owned and managed by X in the club therefore the backups on this server would be owned by the club members. The server can then be allocated x amount of bandwidth and will allow club members on the 24-7 network to access and download directly from this server. I have not investigated this nor have i investigated the implications of this but am prepared to listen to idea's and thoughts on the subject and then maybe to do some investigations on what 24-7Online could do to assist its subscribers. I am not sure as to what files you would be sharing from this server but would assume it to be above board and legal.

P2P now is so far advanced from the days of Kazaa and Napster, it is not even in the same category. Where as the original file sharing app's were used predominately for piracy, now anybody trying to load balance their software distribution can use a cheaper alternative. It is naive to think it is only used for legitimate reasons, but is fast becoming a necessary part of any broadband service.

Your idea of running your own service definitely has merits, and many ISP's successfully do so already. My suggestion though is instead of posting here, about potential services on your network, rather contact your clients directly.

well here is a good start, since not all ur client have ideas.
And if the ideas good enough, u might get us to join right?;)
Think it would be good to start one, maybe make it an added service to ur client, able to p2p amongst each other.
If its thru ur own networks, there shouldn't be a very high cost right?
If thats the case, then first charge ur client a low charge to join X club, becoz the main thing about p2p is to have many ppl with many files to p2p with. Will be pointless if its just 10 ppl on, then they'll have each other's shared data in a few days~

So I dunno~ Here u can get some suggestions, but like nomdeplume said, ask ur clients first for their point of views and interest in such a setup

i use 24-7 and would possibly be interested although at the moment i'm really unhappy with your service. So not sure i would buy into anything else you had to offer. I paid R3200 installation incl first months fee. I have a 256k gold account and my downloads have been lagging and all round your service lacks alot.

maybe it's telkom fault or the isp?

it would nice to join a local p2p again

There is a local WISP (Cape town) that allows p2p filesharing between their client for free. It works at around 6mb/s apparently.

Should be great, it makes the their internet service right at the top of the pile for heavy downloaders.. almost. Depends on how much is available on the hub. But its probably one of those slowish WISPs (like most are) so it should be cheap and you can get all of your internet done and still download very fast without effecting browsing speeds.

Id love to try it out, but no signal in my area. I remember thinking about it a while back. Can anyone remind me who does now again?
