I use Peerblock when I download torrents.

Now that I've switched to Newsleecher, NXBMatrix and NewsDemon, do I still need to run Peerblock?

I keep peerblock running the whole time, even if my torrent client isn't running. It still shows blocked IP's in it's log, so I'm happy to have it. Still someone trying to see who I am... That and a modified hosts file keeps my mind at ease

Peerblock is only relevant for torrents. Peerblock is used to stop incoming connections from people you don't want to connect to your PC. Newsgroup downloads don't work like this, it is just you connecting to the News server, there are no incoming connections to block and therefore there is no need for Peerblock.

I don't agree that it's only relevant for torrents - there are so many attempts by the IP's in Germany, Nigeria, China, Russia, etc, that I keep it running 24/7; you'll be amazed who is trying to connect...

If you do not have your torrent client running and you are sitting behind a NAT firewall then it is impossible for any incoming connections to get to your PC in the first place. It is the torrent client in the first place that creates the port forwarding necessary (usually using uPNP, but also if configured manually in your ADSL router) for an attack.

Hence, Peerblock is not necessary when you stop using a torrent client. Your router should be blocking all incoming connections.

Agree with deweyzeph

Even if the dsl router firewall is disabled the router wont know where to send the incoming traffic.

The torrent software is responsible for opening the two way portal between earth and the torrent world

Peerblock also blocks other things like spyware and adverts... and for some reason educational facilities like universities etc.

Peerblock is an absolute nessesity for torrents but I keep it on all day anyway, my torrents only run at night but I get hits all day.

Please recommend an alternative program I could use?

It's had the subscription for a while now. IMO the small amount for the subscription is justified; PB hasn't let me down yet
