a Pensioner friend of mine got xp home on his pc.
He phoned me this morning, xp dead. Got their, format the pc, reinstall with his cd. He put all his cd's in those pouch thing, and wrote the code on paper. The code is on a piece of paper and it was wrong. Phone MS. they want a photo copy of the cd and the original receipt, which the pensioner dont have any more. Years ago they did activate the pc with MS.
 
Pity, you could have extracted the keys before formatting.

Pensioner is kinda fooked, MS want's his money ;)
 
Microsoft would prefer you pirate their product than use an alternative like Ubuntu.

So do what you can with what you have.
 
Ja, pity you couldn't extract the code to start with, but if it was dead, was not going to happen.

chances are good that it was pirated to begin with anyway... but I would just load another pirated version for him. You are not going to find a legit version of XP anywhere now.

Oh yes, you do. Certain netbook models come preinstalled with XP Home. But that'll be too expensive though.
 
keys are cheap on ebay, bought one to activate my windows 7, it's a retail key, only a R170 odd rand I paid, lol.
 
I get pissed off when security messes people around like that.
Just check is it OEM or Retail version he has?
 
He bought the cd after he wanted to download his video camera on computer.
He install, then phoned ms to activate it.

But, as Gary said, plenty around, got a cd and number, will install it for him for free.

I think lots of people have programs and lost their numbers.
Dont know have many xp lisences their are, But because he have a legal program, phone ms with big hopes.
Some MS man told me their is a 8 digit number on cd starting with X. He said phoned ms helpdesk number and they will help, but then no help.
 
wheres his COA? without it, its an illegal copy and MS wont help
 
Try this method:

Get a fake key off the internet - one that works with the installation.
Once installed, download a tool from the Microsoft website called: "Key Update Tool"
Run the key update tool and enter the real licence key when prompted, just make sure you are connected to the internet.
Maybe this will work.

COA, if it's an OEM version, MS licence for systembuilders states that it must be stuck on the case, this does not apply to a Retail version. Hence my initial question.
 
Well the PC had to have some version of Windows installed at some stage. What was it? Does it have a sticker saying "Designed for Windows XP" on it?
 
no sticker.

install another xp cd on it. Everything fine now.

My point was, if you loose your number, your are in trouble with uncle bill.
